Anyone know what this is??
Just driven home from work and was messing under the bonnet once I got home. Probably shouldn't have done it, but opened the oil cap pretty much as soon as I opened the bonnet (don't know why I did).
Got a shock when I saw this - is it because I've only done a short trip (11 miles). Car didn't even get to full temp. Scared now!!!! |

Yes could be that then, weirdly enough at the minute I'm only doing 9 miles to work and haven't seen this happening yet but I do use the motorway every couple of weeks, probably worth a little stretch down an a road or the motorway and get it upto temp every weekend to stop it

That looks like a bit more than mayo. How often are you changing your oil and filter? If you're on CBS intervals it could be indicative of sludge in the valve train...

I'd change oil and filters more often.

It's nothing to majorly worry about as Tin noticed the same with his 135i after only a short trip the one day. It is because the cars not getting up to temp. You need to get the car out once a week at least for a good run to get the temps up and properly get the oil moving.

I've only owned it since October. It'll be getting an oil change soon though (I intend every 6k miles). It's previous owner did everything through BMW so I reckon it's probably been kept to CBS.

Any recommendations as to which engine oil is best to go for, going forward? If I do have bits of sludge in there I want to break them down gradually, rather than have big bits break off and the car have the engine equivalent of a heart attack! |

If you think you do have sludge, it's probably best to consult a good indy about the possibility of an engine flush. I'm not a big fan of flushing myself, but if it's bad, it might be worth it. As for oil going forward, any good quality fully synthetic with BMW LL04 approval will be fine.

Make sure the thermostat is working and the engines actually reaching operating temperature.
11miles is long enough that it should be fully warmed up by then. Just reduce your oil change interval and continue using your normal oil. I change my oil every 5k. Force of habit, i like clean engines. A petrol engine should be able to do most of that 5k interval without making the oil black. If its dirty inside it will go black pretty quickly, so just change it again. After 5k the oil should still be brown. |

Gave the car a longer run on the way home from work last night, also used the paddles to try and keep the revs up. Got home, checked cap and no yellowyness - so i'm assuming that it's as RajB said and just because it was a short run.

Yeah give it some revs once warm. These things were built to give it some! If you've got some nice straight roads nearby take a longer route home every now and again and have a flirt with the red line!
