Any good quality fully synthetic marked as achieving BMW LL04 spec will be fine.

My local harry fairbairn BMW dealer does 20L of LL04 5w30 C3 oil for about £50.
Its an off-brand, but if the dealer are selling it and it meets LL04 then i'm happy with it in my engine. I change my oil every 5k anyway, so makes quite a difference when an oil change costs me £25 rather than £70-80 using Castrol or whatever. |

That's sounds like a good idea I was toying with just giving it the dealership and letting them doing it for £150+ which also keeps the service history up to date |

But your way does tempt me. Is oil definitely oil? Ie does Mobil oil have any additional things in their oil, compared to the cheap stuff from BMW, that makes it better for the engine? |

I have my oil done every 12 months at BMW (my local one uses Castro)
I also have it changed every 6 months at national tyres who use Fuchs (£45 including a Mann filter) |

I've often thought about that oil, but according to the Mobil 1 website, it doesn't have the BMWLL04 approval. Only their 5W-30 has that...

I've used it for the the last 12,000 miles with no issues for two oil changes carried out by Rybrook Warwick who didn't mind me providing the oil.
http://www.mobil.co.uk/UK-English-LC...esp-0w30.aspx# I prefer it to Castrol. It has better specs than it too. BMW had a longstanding partnership with Mobil1 in the 80s and 90s. Lord knows why they switched over to Castrol. |

I think it had something to do with Castrol's sponsorship of the Williams F1 team when they used BMW engines back in the early 2000s.

Iv seen a few companies on eBay that sell ll04 oil by 20l drums. They seem to be family run business all made in England aswell.
Is there a loophole in the advertising Because iv seen some that say ll04 spec And some Say bmw approved oil ll04 |

LL04 is a standard.
You can produce an oil to that standard, and state that its "LL04 spec" or "Meets the requirements of LL04" To get approval you have to submit your oil to BMW, along with a healthy fee, for them to test it and give you the "approval", which then lets you advertise it as "LL04 approved" The cheaper oils arent going to be approved, it costs too much for a small outfit, and eats into the profit margins for the budget brands. But that doesnt mean the oil is bad, or doesnt meet the specs. I guess theres a possibility that they're outright lying on the front of the carton, saying it meets LL04 when it doesnt, but i'm not sure thats particularly likely... For example EuroCarParts sells their TripleQX oil which meets LL04: http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/ca...6062&0&cc5_247 Its not approved, but it meets the spec so whats the issue? Unless you think they are lying... |

I put Mobil 5/30 ESP when I first got my 335d as I wanted 1 of the best oils in my car. Even with a discount it cost about £80 for 10 litres.
Which is a lot of money seeing as I've done 10k in 2/3 months. For the next service I shopped about and doing a bit of reasearch on the web, and speaking to people in the trade, the triple QX oil 5/30 is aperently made by shell and is meant to be a very good oil for the price. I paid £37 I think for 10 litres at Euro car parts. More than half the price than Mobil 1. Is the triple QX really half the quality of the Mobil 1? |
