Uniroyal Rainsport 3... Burning rubber smell?

In all my years of driving... I have never smelt a burning rubber smell from a tyre... I put a full set of RS3's on last week... have covered 100 city miles... and 100 easy going motorway miles... every now and then there is a strong burning rubber smell from them... usually goes away after a minute...

Is that normal for a tyre?

Strange one.The last time that I had a burning rubber smell, was when one of my springs cracked.Because it was slightly lowered,it wasn't immediately noticeable. All was ok when I went to work and parked up,but as I joined the motorway on the way home I started to smell burning on and off!
Turned out the spring had cracked and where it had dropped slightly, there was a nice ridge being worn into the tyre. That was an expensive week
I'd get the wheels off and have a good look...

Doesn't the DPF give off a burning rubber type smell when it's regenerating...

... could be coincidental timing??

If it's they tyres you'd expect to see heat marks if they are getting that hot or rubbing somewhere.

What ^ said. I've had this occur in the past also. Have a check of the inside face of the tyre and check for the groove. Also check that the tyre isn't just touching the wheel arch.

I had this on my 320d with runflats, as soon as i put the m359 reps with normal tyres on it stopped.

Now have a 330d with run flats and ive noticed it a few times.

Definitely get it up in the air and check the tyres over. It does sound like one of the tyres is slightly catching somewhere. Only had this on my corrado back in the day when I fitted some new rims and hadn't realised but the one tyre was just fractionally touching the spring. That was not good as you could smell the burning rubber of the tyre being worn away slighty against the spring...

Found nothing in the air. I think it is just because they are soft tyres and don't like spirited driving. I am going to keep an eye out. We put it on a rolling road and were able to recreate the smell from the back tyres - nothing was rubbing. I guess they may not last long! Apparently it is a feature of this tyre... They ware really fast to begin with... 1.6mm in 100 miles in some cases and then stabilise...
