Chamois Leather OK?

On previous cars with "old fashioned" paint I've used a chamois leather to dry it off after washing. I hear the new paint is acrylic/latex and rather soft. Would it be OK or a bad idea to use a chamois leather on the paint of a new 08 E90 (Montego Blue)?

I really don't know anyone who still uses Chamois leather to dry. (I am sure there are..but I don't know any)

I am pretty sure it is just personal preference for those that do, but the facts are that and waffle weave micro-fiber have been designed to absorb the water and really prevent scratches better then just about anything! (except a air compressor )

The biggest difference between using a traditional chamois and a quality waffle weave microfiber towel to dry your paint is that a chamois is a relatively flat surface. As it drys, any remaining contamination cannot be pulled away from the surface, so it drags it across the paint leaving behind swirl marks or other imperfections. With a waffle weave drying towel, the textured weave allows you to pull some light contamination away from the surface allowing for a safer method of drying.

Hope this helps.

Chammies are a relic of the past. Was great a generation ago, but time to upgrade I gave all of mine to my dad, who's not a detailing fanatic (whistles innocently).

Thanks guys. Sounds like its time to retire the old chamois and look into getting "waffle weave micro-fiber drying towels" that you mentioned. To be honest, I'm not a detailing fanatic, I pretty much just wash and dry my car at home or the car wash (though I'm going to be rethinking that due to the modern soft paint) and take it in somewhere once a year for a detail. So, I probably don't belong in this thread. Btw, anyone have experience with the Turbo Wash device? This is just for quick washes at the weekends.

I use an absorber on "to be detailed" cars. These cars do not sheet or dry easily, therefor leaving me to use 3-4 WW just to dry them.

I also use an absorber as well. I like the fact that when they're dry, they are so hard and smooth. It seems like it's hard to trap contaminants onto the absorber's surface, or if you do, you can brush it off when it's dry.

That's the plus side. I guess the minus is that I have to be careful when drying, because if there are still surface contaminants, it doesn't have the plushness of the ww to prevent swirling.

I tried the waffles and just did not like them, so stick with my chamois. I wash it out at the end of every drying session, then wrap it nicely and put it away. I rinse it good before I use it on the next vehicle.

Back again! I was in Costco today and noticed they have packs of 36 yellow MF cloths for $15. Are they any good for drying the car down after washing and rinsing?

Also, anyone have any comments on the effectiveness of the TurboWash for soaping the car up and getting the grime off?

My experience with Costco MF's are that they are quite cheap in quality. I still by them when I see them, but I never use them on paint. I use them for wheel and undercarriage detailing and just throw them out when they get really dirty. Sure they are better than your normal cloth towels, but not as high quality as the MF's you can purchase at CG or detailedimage.

Out of all the MF’s I have used, these are my favorite:

Drying:

MF’s for paint use

For wax removal:

Wash sponge (you can also get a grout sponge that will work great):
http://www.chemicalguys.com/wash_spo..._p/mic_492.htm

And just keep the Costco MF’s for other detailing need’s.
