Question Still no word on towing?

I'm seriously considering an X6, but I'd really like some towing capacity for a small Ski boat.

My current X5 works great and if I cannot get a definitive answer on the X6, I'll just order another X5. (tough problem eh?)

Dealer seems to think the answer is yes but no confirmation anywhere.

The X6 product brochure for North America (from BMW.com), under ‘Comfort and convenience’ section – last listing, does say “Pre-wiring for trailer hitch” and shows it as a STANDARD FEATURE for both xDrive35i and xDrive50i models. The brochure doesn’t seem to mention towing anywhere else though.

Surely, given the weight is nearly identical to the X5, the power/torque is more, the running gear & suspension is nearly identical; surely, the towing will be similar to the X5. Wouldn’t you think??

A late follow up on this:

I saw a X6 on PCH in So.Cal with Mfrg plates towing a 15-20ft trailer.

Testing?

Towing numbers listed in Euro cataloge...

You can go to the global BMW site and download the full product brochure (but for non-US spec cars)…

Go to http://www.bmw.com/ select X6 and find one of the downloads (the 4.46 MB PDF download is the full catalogue).

The European catalog for the X6 clearly lists towing to be:

Permitted trailer load, unbraked – 750kg all models

Permitted trailer load, braked, max. 12% gradient – 2,700/3,500kg (where 3,500 require some ‘special option increased trailer load’) for all models except the 50i.

Permitted trailer load, braked, max. 12% gradient – 3,500kg for the 50i with no ‘special option’ required.

Same listing for 8% gradient.

No big surprise – these are EXACTLY the same numbers as listed for the X5

Sadly, the European catalog does NOT show the trailer hitch itself as an option… so I guess it’s totally a DIO (Dealer installed option). I was really curious about where the hitch protrudes from the rear bumper area. The tail is so high on the vehicle, I’m guessing the hitch is actually below most everything…

Cheers,

I'm sure the X6 can tow just as much as the X5, they will give it some conservative rating like 6000 lbs for all models when it may be able to tow more. X5's are rated at 6k as well but ive seen them tow 8000 lbs easily with brake controllers. Its just to safeguard BMW's butt, and they will not officially release information until they have put it through testing so it could be a while.
