Dealer screwed me over on a Launch M2

--Midland Texas --

It's funny how 24 hours completed changes you.

I inquired for a BMW M2 on Saturday. Dealer calls me back on Monday and says they do have one available. It will require a $1500 dollar non-refundable deposit.

He says once I have decided, the money is sent by cashiers check or money order. He says if I don't want it, there will be 3 people in queue that are also inquiring. I asked for the VIN number and parts list. I also asked for the transportation number for how to ship it from Texas to California. After a day of work and getting the logistics down - I emailed him saying I will take the car. But I got no answer the entire day.

I called back the next day and he says he already sold the car. Now I'm listening from other Bimmerpost members that this French dude has been selling the same car to multiple people.

I know sales people are some of the scummiest people but I have a serious problem with the lack of communication and transparency. If the dealer would have just said "we have a few people in front of you" - i would of been more cooperative. But I found out that TWO SALESMEN were selling the same car to multiple people. What kind of joke is this?

I can see the logic though, as they can get twice the money for a car.

You mean for the deposit? It's only 1 car allocation.

You do understand that what they did is illegal and punishable by law in the U.S., right?

But you never sent the deposit right? If not, I don't see what he did wrong...sounds like the first person with a deposit in got the car. Now if they were accepting multiple deposits for a single car...that would be a problem.

One of the dealers I was working with texted me about two (2) allocations they had available. This was 6:40pm.
I respond at 8:02pm, asking if both are available.
He responds at 8:05pm telling me, "YES, but i have to get a move on it."
I respond at 8:15. Please provide details of what I need to do moving forward as I have never purchased a car from an out of state dealer. I asked for Cost, fees, timetable, schedule etc etc.
He responds immediately, "Yes, we can do all of this."
I respond at 8:19pm, "Great, I look forward to your email!"

No email
no email
no email
Maybe it was late and he'll get it to me 1st thing in the morning.

...Morning...
No email
I texted at 10:19am if he was in the office today...NO RESPONSE.

I call at 10:26am. Both allocations are gone...(In Jim Rome's voice) Allegedly!!!
He said I told you, "you had to move on this!"

SMH. Car Salespeople are scum holes.

jk, it makes no sense why they'd do that. And I've never heard of a bidding war at a dealership.

Hate to say it but there is something to be said about developing relationships with dealers and doing repeat business. Last car I bought, the Allroad, my guy was $50 a month higher than the best price I got. He got closer but not all the way there. And I still got the car from him. Why? To pay him back for the fact that he called all his clients and found one who had the unusual color we were thinking about and arranged for me to meet this woman at her home to see the car in person before ordering. Thank god because it was hideous and we ended up with a gorgeous blue instead. So in this case if you need the car right away I totally get calling around or whatever, but finding someone you can trust, or at least in the case of car dealers the least scummy of the scum bags, does pay some rewards.

Again, I still don't see what they did wrong. Devils advocate here but If I understand correctly, OP never sent in his deposit....so if I'm another sales guy in there (in sure there is more than one salesperson working there), and my client wants the car and has a deposit in hand, there is no way I'm going to step aside because another sales guy says he MAY have a buyer for it already...early bird gets the worm.

The problem is the lack of transparency. There was no mention of the following:

No mention of "You must send me a deposit as ASAP"
No Mention of "I have another salesman also trying to sell this car to other people"
No Mention of "there are people trying to make the deposit right now".

This is what he has mentioned to me:
1) I will send you the VIN number and transportation information.
2) Please look it over and get back to me.
3) Once you have decided - please head to your bank and I will give you the wire transfer information to complete the deposit. (Sounds fishy).
4) The Deposit is non-refundable.

Any person would first take at least 2-3 hours to go over the sheet. go over the logistics and then get the bank prepared. Which is what I did.

After the phone call - he sent an email 5 minutes later - I asked for 2 questions within 5 minutes of that email sent - no response.

I emailed back in 3 hrs later to say I want to allocation - no response.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then the next day i found out -

While he is selling this car - another salesman in the same group is selling this car. So these guys have NO COMMUNICATION BETWEEN SALESMAN? I think that's the stupidest logic ever considering they only get 1 allocation.

What they should of said is the following:

"Hey we have a LBB 6MT Allocation, i'm sending you the VIN information now but I want you to know that we have contacted 3 people and who ever send the deposit first is the person whom will get it, I apologize for the haste decision but if you want to move fast on this car, I'd advice you go to a bank".

and what I just wrote sounds like complete crap! This car will sell like hotcakes, I would of like it better if they said I was #3 on the list, if the first 2 don't agree to make a deposit, then I will give you the allocation.

NO TRANSPARENCY.

I agree with Dabozo, you were just too slow. There is no guarantee without a deposit. All the information you said was missing is just basic sales and is always like that.

When it comes to popular things like an M2 I wouldn't email as that is the last thing a seller prioratize during a workday. The floor and phones will always have priority.

Oh don't get me wrong..I would be pissed off too!
these sales people are on commission unfortunately ...so it's every man for himself I guess. They wouldn't want to tip each other off that a sale was eminent.
This is my assumption anyways.

I hope you get your m2 eventually dammitcubs...

My condolences, but this car is a hot item. It reminds me of a time I was looking for an apartment on the west side. I was young and inexperienced. I walked into an open house late in the day for a great apartment. Long story short, multiple people had already viewed it, walked in WITH blank checks ready to leave deposits, and basically the apartment was gone before I ever stepped foot in it (pending credit checks).

I wasn't told in the ad that I should arrive early with everything ready to go, but you live and learn.

Well I woudn't call it - you snooze, you lose.

I literally needed 3 hours to just confirm the bank and VIN number. He wasn't like (in a french voice).."If you don't say yes right now, it will be gone".

He told me to check out the email and get back to him. My God.

Not saying the dealer is right in anyway. But this is expected.
Sorry you had to go through it but there are more chances out there!
And if all else fails, just remember, this car will be produced for at least 4 years!
