Thumbs up BMW M4 GTS M Carbon Compound Wheels options announced!

In spring 2016 the latest high-performance model from BMW M GmbH will be available with an additional equipment option which brings its exclusive, racing-inspired character even more prominently to the fore. The new BMW M4 GTS (combined fuel consumption: 8.5 l/100 km [33.2 mpg imp]; combined CO2 emissions: 199 g/km) – whose six-cylinder in-line engine develops 368 kW/500 hp with the help of the water injection system employed for the first time in a series-produced vehicle and which sets new standards in intelligent lightweight design with features including an array of components made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) – will be available from launch in March 2016 with another innovation in chassis technology.

The options list for the BMW M4 GTS will include M Carbon Compound wheels (front: 9.5 J x 19, rear: 10.5 J x 20), whose innovative material characteristics bring about a significant reduction in unsprung and rotating masses and therefore have a positive effect on the car’s acceleration and deceleration, steering responses and vibration levels.

Designed for the race track yet also approved for road use, this technological showpiece is therefore the world’s first series-produced vehicle that can be fitted with wheels boasting a CFRP/aluminium-composite construction. They enable around seven kilograms to be shaved off the weight of a BMW M4 GTS fitted with the already extraordinarily lightweight forged aluminium wheels specified as standard. Rim wells in exposed carbon also lend the BMW Carbon Compound wheels exclusive visual accents. The wheels are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres adapted specially for the BMW M4 GTS (front: 265/35 ZR19, rear: 285/30 ZR20).

Wow about time BMW gets on board. Aren't CF wheels already available on the new Mustang? These look sick.

Wait a minute - so you are saying that there will be optional wheels that are both light weight and aesthetically pleasing? Now this is indeed some real good news.

I mean these are still no 359M in the looks department, but they probably weigh half as much as those. Cost of course, will be high - but if you are already shelling out $140k-ish, why not?

I wonder if they will eventually make these available through the M Performance Parts brand as well?

Notice the tire on the wheel is a 255 wide in 19s therefore it may eventually be available via M Performance parts.....

Good observation. So you are saying that because the GTS tire is 265mm wide, and therefore this isn't a GTS tire, they may have other applications in mind? Sure, maybe. I think most people would prefer 19" both front and rear though (or perhaps 20" front and rear, like the ZCP), so hopefully they offer other sizes too.

The wheels are 9.5 wide in front and 10.5 in rear so they are better with 265/285 setup but can be used with 255/275 I believe. Time will tell, but I think they may eventually be available via M Performance Parts- just not right away and not cheap.

It says "The wheels are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres adapted specially for the BMW M4 GTS (front: 265/35 ZR19, rear: 285/30 ZR20)."

But the picture definitely shows 255 tires.

You're right it does not give actual weight, but they are obviously very light. That's ~ 15.4 lbs. for the car or about 3.8 lbs. per wheel.

That looks awesome. I'm absolutely terrified to find how much they are.

Happy to see BMW offering a lightweight 19" option for this track focused car. I don't understand the 20" stuff.

Spoke too soon Thank you for the correction.

I suppose the concept is more acceptable with this carbon implementation as they've made an effort to offset the size with lighter materials. Aside from appearance, is there a real word performance advantage to running a staggered 19/20 diameter setup over 19/19? I'm curious to know as I've seen a couple newer cars doing this recently.

Now THOSE are some nice looking wheels. On a scale of 1-10 the ones being offered on the competition package are a 2, while these are a 10.

I really do not have a definitive answer but here is a good thread on the subject:

Beautiful! Technological innovation (hybrid materials), lightweight AND good looking.

Now hopefully everyone stops complaining about the GTS wheels. Anyone that's committed to the $140k I doubt would even flinch at whatever these ends up costing.

You're right it does give actual weight, but they are obviously very light. That's ~ 30.8 lbs. for the car or about 7 3/4 lbs. per wheel.
A quick google conversion shows 7 kilograms =15.4 lbs, so that's about 3 3/4 lbs per wheel, unless I'm missing something.

You are right and I have corrected my post. I mentally converted the 7 kilos twice, which doubled the weight. Thanks for the correction.
