Whats your real MPG?

Hey all,

Thought id see how my car matches up in terms of economy with other E92's

I have a bone stock E92 335i (N54).

Long motorway commute usually averages 30-35 mpg

Around town i average 22-24 mpg

Usually combined i get 25-29 or so dependant the long to short distance journeys ive done. Best mpg on a commute was 43-44, lowest was around 17.

Over the last 2500 miles on my N55 335i e91 auto I got.

Average - 25 mpg
Lowest - 18mpg
Highest - 36mpg

All dependent on the journey. I have a big trip in the summer, doing around 1500 in 7 days, I hope to get an average of 30mpg.

Interesting figures, hopefully you'll exceed the 30mpg on long runs, unless you drive at really high speeds.

Out of interest, my F11 535i with the same N55 engine has averaged 30.6mpg over 3-years and 24k miles. Motorway runs are rare, but my trips to Wiltshire are typically around 33 - 34mpg for the trip of 1,000 miles.

Local use is typically 29 - 31mpg, according to season.

I'm sure the 8-speed gearbox helps my consumption, but I do have more weight to shift of the line. .

My 335i averages just over 29mpg, but I do a fair bit of motorway mileage. Suspect it's low 20's round town at best.

Highlandpete.

I get 36mpg on motorway and not driving higher than 70mph. Also being gentle on the power.

But 25 is the most common with a full mix of town and motorway. And 18 is when I take for a serious fun drive.
To be fair I don't care much about the mpg but with a trip to France this year I need to remember I need to stop every 300 miles to refuel.

I wonder why the 335i and the 330i mpg's are so low, considering there are other 3litre cars out there that do far better mpg.

I can speak for the 335i when i say Turbos and torque. Upon take off even gently the mpg drops to 7mpg which the minimum. Once at speed and you ease off it creeps up, but stopping, starting and idling kill mpg. Also any point using the turbos(over 3k rpm) the MPG falls like a stone.

However the MPG for a 3.0 isnt bad in the 335 & 330 check most 3.0s from say audi or mercedes and they wont show as good as the bmws

Compare for instance a M3 e46, golf R32 or any other similar displacement car and those mentioned dont look so bad especialky given the power they offer

When I did mainly town mileage in the winter I was getting 22mpg. Still really good tbh considering the amount of near idling in the cold

They aren't low. 30mpg from a 3l petrol in a 1600kg car is very good. Take a look at what Audi diesels get. People see 35mpg from a 2.0 rep mobile.

Remapped E90 330d, my long term average is 36.3mpg over 4,762 miles, mixed driving, mainly town, A & B roads, not much motorway, tracked using Fuelly.

Best mpg I've seen was 51.3mpg average over a 210 mile steady motorway run.

Given that the 330i and 335i are only 5-7mpg behind the 330d and 335d on the whole, I'd suggest that they're not bad at all. Now my E60 M5 on the other hand......

What are these other cars that aren't so bad then?

The majority of 3l cars (>250bhp) will be hanging around mid to high 20s mpg. Unless driven on motorways all the time with no traffic.

On a 335i it is impossible to stay off boost. The turbos kick in from about 12/1500rpm.

Not a lot. A full tank (70 litres) could be used in a little as 100 miles. Best I had was a smidge over 300, driving like a granny. Overall, mine was returning 17.9mpg, but I did plenty of motorway trips too. Was bloody epic though!
