BMW FS - GFV Shenanigans

So I was considering one last change to my spec to add in the Pro Nav Plus pack and get the HUD for £595. I asked my dealer to indicate the impact on monthlies and GFV.

Turns out adding the pack REDUCES the GFV by £130 - how exactly does that work?!

I'm wondering if it's to do with the pack being brand new and thus, BMW FS having no data; still think it's ludicrous to *dip* the GFV! Flat I could perhaps understand...

whoever dreamt up the algorithm that says "if you add pro satnav and HUD let's reduce the GFV"... well with a twisted mind like that they should be working in an insurance company!

It doesn't work and / or make any sense.. The Pro-Nav etc. for me upped the GFV, only bought it 10 days ago.. So can't be that much difference.

What is even odder is I saw an older thread on here saying the HUD *added* £400 to their GFV thus reducing the monthlies impact.

Imagine my surprise when the dealer email came through...

Still contemplating doing it as I'd probably pay for the upgrade up front. Hopefully will just result in a bit of positive equity come term when their data shows, that maybe, having a HUD means people will pay a bit more for a car. Who would have guessed?!

Yep - I have Pro Nav specced at present, the change to Plus (with HUD) is what made it reduce £130.

Which still doesn't make any sense, if you add options (worth) how can it go down in value? Unless whoever's doing the stats is a bit clueless.

I've heard of car colours de-valuing GFV (like Pink is a rare colour) but never additional tech options. I'd recommend getting it double checked somewhere.. Or just get your dealer to write it off, I'll be getting free seal and protect anyway .

Bonkers! Did you challenge it with the finance person quoting you?

Maybe HUD is viewed as another complicated item that might break when out of warranty in AUC buyers minds? Computer says 'no'.

I'm pretty sure it's actually because the expected value of the car in general has gone down, rather than the addition of the option ( same happened to me 6 months ago )

Its not the option that has made your GFV go down...its the change of year into the new quarter that has made this for a certain deposit and car...i was with the dealer yesterday to check on a particular car and the quotes which they gave on 28th of December and 7th of jan the GFV has dropped by around £130

If you add some other option which is most sought after then it may up your GFV but that option until and unless you want and is more than this £130 wont make sense i guess?

This got me thinking and I quite enjoy unravelling black box BS like this. So I went and had a play with their website through to the BMW FS PCP (all with 8k mileage) options:

Car as it is today i.e. Pro Nav only:
- List £40905, 48 month GFV is £13709

Car with Pro Nav Plus Pack (HUD for £595):
- List £41500, 48 month GFV is £13582
Reduced by £130

Car with HUD as a stand alone option (cost is £825, configurator not intelligent enough yet to default to the pack):
- List £41730, 48 month GFV is £13836
Increased by £130

Conclusion: The algorithm is flawed and isn't configured to correctly treat underlying spec change of the new Pro Nav Plus pack.

Decision: I'm gonna just get it, dump the £595 into my deposit and them have a grand old £260 quid of breathing room in my equity come term...
