Misfire only when first day cold start (Update - $2800 fixed and $1300 refunded)

So my car has been misfiring for a week now. The temp is around 32-37F here in CT.

Car would start instantly no problem. After a few second engine will run rough and engine service light will come on. Checked the code on JB4, misfired on 1,2,3 cylinders. I swapped coils, but still the same cylinders.

The thing is I installed the plugs around 10k miles ago. Car runs perfect when WOT in cold weather. (when engine is warmed of course)

So what could cause the problem? Bad injectors? Carbon buildup? Fuel filter?
Like I said, it only happens on first day low temp startup. Otherwise its perfectly fine.

Update: Fixed the car at dealer for $2800. (500 Labor and over 2000 are parts). Car runs smooth and pulls strong.
Update: After talked to BMW NA, two weeks later my service adviser Dale told me that they will refund $1300 back to me. So, $1500 for 6 genuine BMW most up-to-date injectors are not so bad.

[IMG][/IMG]

Did they used my newly changed plugs to burn carbons?
I changed my plugs just to rule out problems... Should have swapped them back

What is oil leaks not lifted????

Check if the injectors are leaking by inspecting the plugs after sitting for 2 hours or so.

What do I look for? Fuel on the plugs?

Yup. Examine and smell them for fuel.

Just changed the spark plugs. Found cylinder 1 plug soaked with fuel..
After change the plug, I got:

29CD misfire cylinder 1 (of course...)
2C2D catalytic converter problem (prob caused by misfire)
2C7B o2 sensor bank 1 (bank 1 is cylinder 1,2,3. So... yeah cause by misfire)
2D2E angle of throttle valve (Usual code, not related)

I really hate to say it... Looks like I gotta visit the stealership again. (auto repairs here are bad, I don't trust them anymore so...)

Cool

Uh oh... The Stealership?! I would advise against it as I have never had a great experience going there. First I would suggest finding a reputable Indy shop that specializes in BMW. I can't imagine my life without my trusted Indy. Sucks you can't trust the shop you already took it to... Finding that needle in a haystack Indy shop is number one priority unless you have no budget. Good Luck dude!! ---------Gohan335iE90

No, no, no!!!!!!!!

Rock auto has injectors for $120 each. If you can't install them have someone on here help you. It's very simple actually even though the DIY makes it look more involved IMO. It took me less than hour start to finish to install new injectors.

The stealership will charge $2500 for new injectors.

Had a similar issue with misfiring this morning. Took it to my Indy, and they diagnosed one bad engine coil. Recommends vanos solinoide, and thermostat. I'll be doing that in the next few days.

Can always try to contact BMWNA and see if they'll reimburse you somewhat. I had a similar situation. Car was out of warranty, leaking FIs, and dealership wanted over 1600 to replace FIs. Given I had gone through like 3-4 other HPFPs, vanos cam, solenoids and others under warranty, they offered to pay for all the parts; I just had to pay the labor of like $400. It's TSB #SI B13 14 10; it doesn't hurt to ask and see what they'll be willing to offer. I didn't need to convince them any harder given my vehicle's track record.

Man. Was that 5 hours labor? That's a robbery. I think I could do it blindfolded in 2 hours.

I changed my injectors in about an hour.
The total job took me 5 as I had to change the valve cover at the same time.

"Burn off procedure" for plugs. Holding the car at 3000 RPM for 5 mins sounds so much less technical.

When they replace the injectors, does anyone know which adaptations should be reset?

I had the same issue as OP. Bought an injector for $120 from Rock Auto, K+DCAN cable for $50, refurbished windows laptop for $100 (only had a Mac) and INPA setup for $30. Changed the injector myself then coded in the garage in about an hour, best decision I've made yet on the car. $200 ($300 with laptop) <<<<< $2800 and you learn more about your car.
