Is OBD security an issue on the new F30 LCI

Hi, Just took delivery of a new facelift 320i M Sport with the new B48 engine (F30 LCI). Had quite a few extras inc M-Sport plus pack and it is now sitting on my drive.

Heard a few horror stories about theft of BMW's by key cloning via the OBD port.

Thought of buying a blank OBD port from BMW and moving the live one and replacing it with the blank to fool any would be thief. Went into the dealership today and was told its not an issue on newer cars so didn't buy anything.

What do you know about this type of theft and has it really been sorted one newer cars?

I'd be more worried about making sure your house is secure speaking from personal experience.

Snap proof locks, alarms, cctv etc. In the end nothing will prevent a determined group from stealing your car.

Yes, neighbours got screwed during the night and took the keys and car. I have got 1080P HD CCTV around the house with two cameras covering the drive and a good house alarm. Won't leave my keys on a hook near the front door either.

Just found this thread which is strange, and recent...but at least they didn't steal the car.

In the West Midlands you are more at risk of car jacking or someone kicking your door in for your keys, or knocking on door and 2 big blokes asking for them.

Just leave the keys in the open, saves being woken up in the early hours.

Mine is locked in the garage and I take my keys to bed with me, I stopped leaving them on the side after we were burgled exactly a year ago and they took the other key whilst we were out.

We now have an alarm which will trigger if the garage is opened as well as the house and we have cctv although we still don't feel secure really!

A bloke I know down the road was woken up by 2 scoundrels with a gun on his foread and just simply asked for the keys to his RS4, he has a zafira now

That's why I leave the keys downstairs.

I don't want some nutter wacked out to fuck wandering around the house.

So just leave them sitting in kitchen.

Admittedly if I do here someone, I am likely to shoot the fucker.

On about alarms, I assume both properties had decent top range security systems, however both still burgled...

Our thieves were caught eventually and we had a laptop and whiskey decanter recovered! The rest was long gone but the police did say that 9 times out of 10 if they hear an alarm they leg it, how accurate this statistic is I don't know but we didn't have one when burgled but we do now.

There is a fair bit of car theft round here in fact according to police stats it's the fastest growing crime, I'm assuming mainly because there are lots of nice cars here.

I do think keys on the side for safety of the family probably makes most sense.

Shit that you have to think about it so much :-(

I assume he is Liverpool way, where as I am West Midlands.

Advice given out by local police.

It's relatively rare, however it does happen.

A number of the BMW thefts involving guns around here are usually rival drug gangs.

I live in a nice area overlooking the Clent Hills, but it is about 9 miles from Birmingham City Centre. These criminals travel to the decent areas to find the nice cars.

Exactly what happens here with us, the ones that burgled us were from 10 miles plus away.

From what I've read BMW got bitten by this and have sorted it accordingly, it's certainly not the news is was 4 or 5 years ago.

Wasn't it the e90 etc cars and F3x weren't at risk? I'm sure there was some sort of recall or suchlike for the e9x?

Mate of mine was woken by his A5 alarm on the drive.

He's a big lad so stuck his head out the window and shouted to the two guys who had it connected to a laptop..

One turns round and says "... Fcuk off back inside or we'll come in for the keys..."

He fcked off back inside.

Didn't get the car but it tools Audi 2 months of reprogramming and module replacement to fix it.

EDIT: Sutton Coldfield.

I hope he went back inside and called the police, or better still picked up a golf club?!
