Car was in for new tyres so was having a spy underneath it and noticed an oil leak coming from the auto box i believe

Have attached a picture. Would appreciate some advice and next course of action

Looks like engine oil to me, ATF is red.

Okay would atf still be red in colour after 86k miles?? I will take it to bmw specialist for a check over

Sump oil apparently

Booked in next friday for gearbox oil change anyways as it is quite rough / notchy

Giveaway for me is the sump's plastic easily identifiable yet you showing picture of metal being contaminated.

Be careful re diagnosing where oil leaks come from on these seen a few people get them wrong in the past, sump's do leak oil, would you believe it oil filer housings can leak oil which travels along the blocks with air flow and filters down the back of the block then down and ends up coating the back of the engine on these, rocker covers etc. can also let go but as you've stated a good indy will hopefully as long as its head tech isn't Ray Charles be able to identify where the leaks from.

Re trans oil trust me as it gets older goes a horrible smelly black in colour

Yeah i've changed gearbox oil in the past myself and have been confronted with black horrible smelling stuff. (On previous cars)

Will have a proper diagnosis next friday. Im getting the gearbox oil changed as a matter of course as the box can be quite notchy at times. Hopefully that will restore silky smooth changes.

No idea who the tech is but its a well reputable indy in Carlisle. Called auto tech i believe

Once the gear box oils all sorted and the sump's changed (don't forget the sleeve) as these leak




then re set engine adaptaions and gear box as well, if there's a software update for both trust me going forward its worth looking at, but adaptaions at least will help as the 2 together can begin to adapt to new found fluid and a freeier flowing pan filter. I hope you're planning to do the pan filter and plug not just drop and change the fluid as the max benifit won't be reached

Nonsense. The oil clearly is coming from the engine side and not from the rear of the tranny where the sleeve is sitting. Buy a new turbo oil feed line for $30 change it in 15 minutes and be happy

Yeah its getting a new pan and filter. Or whatever it needs. Garage is doing it. Hopefully they do it correctly but they are well respected

My pictures posted show 3 or 4 trans sump leaks that what I was referring too. If you read one of my comments further up you'd notice that I said the giveaway for me that this wasn't a tranny leak was the fact that it was coating metal as aposed to the regal plastic tranny sump, if you read a little further you'd notice I've mentioned things like rocker cover leaks, oil filter housing leaks etc

Best £375 i have spent. Gearbox is now silky smooth! Buzzing!
