Buying a 320d LCI - Avoid early ones ?

I've owned a couple of pre facelift E91's in the past with the 163bhp engine and now looking to get a newer E91 320d approx 2010/2011.

I remember reading about the cam chain sprocket causing failures in the early facelift cars approx 2008/2009 and did see a date written somewhere that stated they had sorted this issue out but can't find it again now. Does anyone here know?

Is it adviseable to avoid the early ones completely and only consider a late 2011/2012 car?

I'd get a later car purely for the even better engine in the 184bhp model.

The later 2011 / 12 cars had revised tensioners to prevent chain failure but I don't know the exact date.

Aren't BMW doing a recall now on the earlier N47 diesels?

I think it was from March 2011 onwards that had the latest changes to the N47

From the PUMA report:

Attention:
No repairs are allowed in vehicles with production date after 03/2011 and vehicles in which all existing measures have already been made.

That's what I'd be looking for then, I'd rather that than but an earlier one and hope BMW fix it

If you have the vin for the car you are looking at, you can easily call BMW and ask if the car is due to be recalled for the QE or 'quality enhancement' as they call it. I've been put off buying an N47 engine equipped car in the past because of the chain problems, but news of the BMW recall has made things look brighter.

Got my car repaired under warranty 2 years ago, they changed the crank, chains, tensioners, etc - basically a bottom end rebuild.

When the QE started this year I took my car in again although I don't know what was done this time around as they only had the car a couple of days. I think they checked/possibly changed the top chain. Didn't notice any difference in engine tone or noise before or since the QE was carried out.

Cheers guys, that's the info I was after.

I was unaware of the recall. Do they replace parts FOC as a precaution now on the earlier affected engines ie 2009-2011?

Didn't cost me anything this time around. A couple of years ago when BMW were in full deniability mode I had to pay my warranty excess.

Might be eligible for some coil pack replacements. Might be worth giving BMW a call.

When did you get yours done? I've had not been contacted about it, first i've heard of it, or do you just have to ring up and mention it then give them your reg/vin, mines Late 2010 318D.

I phoned up the dealer and gave my VIN. They asked me when I wanted to book it in and would I like a courtesy car while the work is being carried out.

What I'm not sure about with these type of recalls is ... Is every car within the recall criteria eligible for the work irrespective of where it was bought/ service history/ mileage etc.

Ie. Would a car with 200k on the clock, 7 owners and no service history be just as eligible for the free QE work, as a BMW approved used vehicle with 2 owners, 50k and fbmwsh?

Yes, as the dealers will presumably invoice BMW for the work. They didn't ask any questions regarding service history or anything like that. Just asked when I wanted to book it in!
