Hi, just for my info: in the UK if you get a private reg number do you have to 'de-register' the old number from the car or does the new private number become an 'alias' for the old number and you can display either? If you de-register the old number do you lose it or does it stay under your name for another vehicle that you may buy later?

If you want to definitely keep the old number, you have to place it on retention. This is via the DLVA web site and costs £80 to retain it on a "retention certificate" for up to 10 years. If as you are nearing the 10 year limit, you've not assigned the number, you are invited to pay to extend the retention. I don't know how much this costs as it was only recently they changed from charging £80 for the retention and then £25 a year for the retention to a much more reasonable £80 for 10 years.
When you assign a number to the car, that is the number you legally have to display. The old number must not be displayed after this time. This number cannot be used to make the car look newer than it actually is, though it can be used to make it look older. For example if my car was a 2014 "64" plate, I could put a 64, 14, 63, 08 and old style number on the car without a problem, but couldn't put a "15" or "65" number on as that would make the car look newer than it is. To retain the number when you change cars, you have to take it off the car and put it on retention (for £80 again) and then assign this to the new car. The car it was removed from will get a number to put back on. If you didn't put the previous number on retention, it is likely this is the number that will be re-assigned to the car. |

Sincere apologies to the OP for hijacking this thread.
Thanks very much for the detailed response, very helpful. Can I get a plate made from any of the online vendors after I get a private reg number? From what I gathered, the front plate has to be white with black letters and the rear plate should be yellow with black letters. I'm looking at the following places: http://absolutereg.co.uk http://www.europlates.com https://www.carreg.co.uk The last vendor offers plates for £34 and does the transfer paperwork for you for £25. Worth the cost, you think?

Tbh you can get plates made up from anywhere, for a lot cheaper than what they are asking... I'm sure if you buy from them they will throw a set of plates in for free if you ask
