OT: mobile speed camera vans- do they work at night?

For a long time I've been a little more relaxed with regard to the mobile units after dark, and actually pretty much after 6pm on local roads...

Is this just because the operators only work normal 8am-6pm type of hours, or because they can only operate in daylight hours for technical reasons?

Or am I just mistaken altogether?!

It's laser, but the operator would need night vision goggles to see you!

They can tell where the cars are from the lights so is it just about the photography required to take a picture of the car itself for identification purposes?

I've always followed this theory too. One small advantage of dark mornings when driving to work!

In most forces they are operated by civilian staff rather than warranted officers hence the office hours.

Here in Dorset they operate 24/7/365. Follow Dorset speed camera locations on Facebook. You'll see them operating all the time.

I thought that, but are you suggesting they could be operated at night technically?

Or just that's the reason they stop at 6pm even in summer when it's still light?

I suspect not as they would not be able to take a pic of your number plate with your headlights on. I've seen on the motorway where their are 50mph limits and they have illuminated areas to catch your number plate for the anpr average speed check

So you're telling me the taxpayer pays the wages of someone to sit in a van pointing a laser gun at a deserted road at 03.00 everyday?

Follow Dorset speed camera locations on Facebook and you'll see where they've been and at what time. They don't sleep down these parts.

Have you taken this up with your MP?

I'd be pretty pissed off if they where paying some bloke to sleep in the back of a 'camera van' all night with my tax dollar!
