car eating rear tires

Hello,
have problem and I don't know if it's normal for BMW E90 (sport package I have to mention, maybe it's important).
I had 2.5 years ago cheap non run-flat rear tires (don't even remember brand name) and I wasn't surprised that it lasted only 1 year.

I replaced them with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3.
It's been only 21000 miles since then and again I have rears almost gone.
Thread pattern is the same: like outer part has bigger diameter than inner.
The more we move from outer to inner parts of the tire the more it's worn.

So is it normal or not ?
Maybe soft tires is bad for stiff suspension ?

How's your driving style? That'll be the biggest influence on tire wear. If you spin the tires and go full throttle a lot then they'll wear quicker. If the inner is much more worn then it's a camber issue. Mine were worn somewhat evenly across the tire. Granted the inner was slightly more worn but I'm on coils and am running slightly more aggressive camber than stock.

These tires aren't that soft though, especially compared to a summer tire. However, this tire is more like a summer tire handling wise (PSS) than the previous Michelin A/S tire.

My car is FBO and occasionally run e85 e40 mix and I went through a set of AS3's in 25k miles. I do the occasional drift around a big hairpin by my house and they spin if I am too aggressive in first. I wouldn't say your car is eating tires, maybe a little shorter tire life than normal but not crazy especially if your car is tuned. I only got 9k out of a set of DWS tires...last time I ever ran Continental.

I only got 13,000 out of my rear A/S 3's. I definitely have a camber issue as outside was 5/32nd and inside was at 2/32nd, though I'd say you did well in terms of your driving style.

I'll be having an alignment next week and trying to relax a bit more behind the wheel

Looks like normal stock camber to me. Same as mine, and almost every other e92 I've seen. Problem is being staggered, we can't rotate like a square set up.

Hard to tell anything from that picture. Take a picture with your camera right behind the wheel (under the bumper) so you get a straight shot across the whole width of the tire.

21k miles doesn't sound too out of line.

i would consider that to be right on the money for the mileage to expect from that tire.

Michelin warranties that specific tire for 45,000 Miles but then cuts that in half so 22,500 if you have a staggered setup(Wider rear vs front). Which sport package does. At 21,000 you are right at what you should expect.

Keep in mind that you can buy higher mileage warranty tires which will last longer but don't expect stellar performance out of them. That being said i personally average about 10-11,000 miles for my rears running Michelin Pilot Super Sports.

BTW always make sure you are getting an alignment every year or two at the least. It does appear you have the slightest camber wear and an alignment will help a bit. But BMW actually specifies negative camber from the factory. ( this means the inside part of your tire will always wear out faster)

I always say... you bought a BMW you gotta pay to play my friend. This is not a Toyota Corolla your maintenance costs will be more than 3x what a Corolla would cost. Tires included.

Proper inflation is important. Proper alignment specs are necessary when tires are NEW.

Not too far off what most folks see. I wore the right side tires through on the inner edge until they essentially popped about a week apart. The tires had about 20k onthem. I attribute this to three perfect right handers i charge daily on the way to work. Driving harder will wear those tires especially those with lower treadwear ratings. Mine were Bridgestone RE050a's with a 140 rating. Not all tire manufacturers rate their treadwear the same so the number can differ from brand to brand if that makes sense.

Next time I plan on buying non run flats and going for a longer lived tire at the expense of performance. Harder tires can actually be quite fun still...

Thanks guys for the input.
I guess it's kind of normal. Not what I expected from non-runflats.
I did alignment regularly as well as balancing tires and was controlling tire pressure.

My thoughts about that: I guess the more stiffer tire the more longer it's gonna live, especially for sport suspension and staggered wheels.
So tend to think that run flats is not that bad choice as I thought before

cause this suspension chews and spits out all tires that do not resist

Check out Tire Rack, pretty much all the reviews are people criticizing the A/S 3's for:

1. Lack of snow performance.
2. Premature tire wear.

Do you rotate your tires every 10000km?
I have over 50k on a set of Michelin as-3's and still have lots of tread left....mind you I have x-drive...and rotate every 10 k

is your camber and toe in spec? The toe will do the most damage.

I think he has a staggered setup, so he can't. I wish I could rotate as well.

Get an alignment and specify for maximum tire life (may have too much negative camber or your toe is out of spec).

how is your alignment and what are your driving habits? I replace my rears every year and my fronts every two years.... Why? Because I love to drive my car moderate with several moments of thrilling acceleration in between.

I make sure my alignment and suspension is GTG.

For those of us that have the mod bug it comes with a lead foot. Why mod the car and not use it...

I only got about 10k out of the rear pair of AS3 on my previous 335i. I abused them occasionally but that's a little disappointing

Camber isn't actually what causes premature tire wear. Having toe out of spec is a bigger issue. Did you ever swap them side to side? Since they are asymmetrical tires you can just swap the rears from left to right.

And 20+ thousand miles isn't that bad for that type of tire as others have said.

Prior to purchasing my bimmer about a month ago this was something I researched to death and having a staggered setup I simply "accepted" the fact that this is a car that loves to eat tires so if I get 15k from the rear tires I will be happy.

Rightfully so, with summer tires I'd guess the average is around 12k.
