Hi Guys,

I'm Chris, I'm new to the forum and I'm on the look out for a new car. I previously owned an E46 330ci Msport which I sold a couple of years ago due to getting a new job with a company car. Anyway a change in circumstances means I now have a different job and am in the market for a new car.
I'm after either a 335i or 335d coupe (I assume this is an E92 model code?) Preferably sub 100k miles, with sat-nav and ideally auto / DCT (I'm particularly keen to hear of your opinions / experiences of these), though I wouldn't rule out a manual! Must have black leather (not a fan of beige or red!). I have around 12k to spend, now I don't know if I'm dreaming or if this is a realistic figure, I'm happy to travel for the right car.

I loved my 330ci, it was Sapphire black with black leather and a was a nice unmolested car. Are there there any bits that I should specifically look out for on a 335i or 335d?

For that money you should be able to get either to be fair. All comes down to mileage, if you are doing less than 12k per year I would go petrol and above diesel.
As for driving experience I would go for a petrol. But I guess you had a similar experience with your old car, mpg is low by any standards. I have an e91 335i and I get 22mpg around town, 26mpg with a little of long runs and 32mpg if most is motorway. I agree the DCT boxes are very nice and prefer over the "old" 6 speed auto. The diesel to my knowledge get low mpg is driven in town, and are pretty good on long runs. I hope this helps.

the mileage is not really relevant when it comes to the 335s,both petrol and diesel are awesome,my 335d gets 4k a yr put on it ,i dont need a diesel,i actually wanted an M3 (E46) but after test driving both the M3 and the 335d (both in the same dealer) the diesel was leagues better and faster so i opted for that as a weekend car ,best thing to do is test drive both and see what is your preference ,shame you dont have the extra £3.5k as mine is for sale and its pretty much mint

Yes I'm aware the economy won't be the greatest but luckily I'm not one of these guys that buys a 300bhp car and moans about economy.

Basically, new job comes with a car allowance (rather than a company car). I'll be using it to visit clients 3 days a week, Bristol & south so I'll be doing quite a bit of mileage over the 3 days but not a huge amount (I anticipate around 1000-1200 miles a month).

I want something that's quiet, well built and is quick and the 335 fits the bill perfectly.

To be fair the 335i is good on fuel on a long run, you can get 35mpg! But I agree if you get a 335i fuel shouldn't be your main concern. I went from a 50mpg car to my 335i. Still getting my head around to the fact I visit a petrol station every week and using 50% more fuel. But the smile I get when that engine runs quickly wipes my memory and the enjoyment kicks in. Get a 335i...

Hiya. I'm based in south Wales as well. I've had both cars very recently, currently driving around in a 335d after just selling the 335i.

Out of the 2 engines I think I prefer the 335i n54, firstly the exhaust note. It's just awesome. Very addictive. The acceleration is feels brutal. so much fun. The exhaust note is not an issue inside the cabin whatsoever but if you live on a quiet street it can be quite loud. My wife always knew when I was outside parking. Round town your looking at low 20s mpg, but on motorways at 70 your talking mid to high30s.

The 335d by comparison is firstly more quieter exhaust wise obviously. The acceleration is near instant. The small turbo being there really makes a huge difference compared with my old 330d. And the thing just keeps on going. I've not known a other diesel keep on pulling high into the Rev range. Round town your talking 30s mpg and motorway I've seen it into the 50s.

Tbh try them both. I went from an I to D as I needed a 4 door and found it really hard to find a good condition and spec 335i in a 4 Dr. A bmw indvidual 335d came up and was perfect.

It's has many key reliability issues done under warranty recently too.
2 new turbos for wastegate rattle and one of the cats replaced due to not being able to remove it, all new oil lines, new vacuum system (basically all the turbo auxiliary parts done), new seat belt and handover mechanism, new passenger wing mirror motor for the "ghost adjustment" issue. New rear diff. Also had a water pump a few months back and DSC hydro unit last year. 2 of the alloys are also less than a year old due to cracks in previous ones.

Thanks for all your input guys, I put a deposit down on one today! Just as I wanted too, Sapphire black, black Dakota leather, sat nav and all the toys....albeit slightly over budget! It only has 40k on the clock and is immaculate - Picking it up on Wednesday, can't wait!

Cheers Tom,its just in the bodyshop at the moment having the stonechips removed so its mint for the next owner plus i decided a black roof would look great on the car so thats being done too,even while its for sale i dont scrimp on anything ,it gets things even if its not needed (yes im a bit crazy haha),i know its not the cheapest out there but i have seen worse advertised (and sell) for more,the car will not disappoint the new owner.

Owned the car for 24hrs and what an incredible bit of kit it is - over the moon with it. Spent this afternoon polishing it and having a play about with it.
After a hunt around, I did find the the other 2 speakers for the 10 speaker stereo, a speaker (or sub I'm guessing) under each seat. Must admit I'm impressed with the sound system - much better than the one I had in my E46. Averaged 33mpg on the way home from picking it up too (from Slough, M4 all the way).

Don't expect to get 33mpg on a regular basis. I run on average 22mpg with town driving. On the last 500 miles my car is running on 24mpg.
