Right folks some advice on prices please...look inside

Hi all.

I have a 330 d m sport Pre-Lci, and I'm looking @ doing the 335D exhaust conversion.

Before you go Yawn....I've already got a few prices, the average is around £450.00 fitted for a custom made one, that's basically from the Dpf back.

Is this a good price?

I still have my Dpf in place, I want to remove it but as funds arn't limitless I was going to do the Exhaust and then remove the Dpf as and when it fails, I'm currently on 108000 miles.

I'm 41 so I don't want super loud BUT I do want it to sound deeper/grunt when under load? is this possible with the 3 litre?

Can anybody recommend a decent place up north that does this work? I'm in BURNLEY Lancashire i'd be happy to drive say 25/35 mile radius for a good job..

I know Hartge has just had a new Cobra system fitted but I believe it was expensive. Has anybody heard his set up?

Cheers all....

Take the DPF off, gut it out and refit it. Then you just need to get the ECU mapped to suit. Minimal cost.

If you stick with the factory 335d back box, it wont be loud, though a aftermarket system will probably be a bit louder, but dervs tend to be pretty quiet when cruising, unlike petrols that can sound a bit boomy and annoying.

I used DCMS in Burnley for an exhaust on my old A4, was a reasonable job for a reasonable price.

Yer I want to do the DPF delete but it's around £400.00 so it's either that or the exhaust @ the mo and I reluctant to do the DPF till it packs up..

I'll give DCMS a ring and get a quote...I'm gunna go custom made with the exhaust I think that way hopefully I can get an idea of how it will sound..

I have no boxes post-DPF on my 330D LCI. Still very quiet IMO, but louder than stock. Will probably gut the DPF along with a remap next year.

With the DPF in place it will be very muffled even with straight pipe.

no harm in keeping it there if its healthy.

I know people who have spent big bucks on trying to get a nice noise out of a diesel exhaust and spent the money and regret it as I don't think youll get what your after with the grumble of a petrol or something

Ive heard good things about Top Gear Exhausts in Burnley. Think they're a Powerflow agent. I knew a garage who imported cars (US stuff from Japan, strangely) and anything with a V8 got sent there to release the burble.
Be warned that your car will whistle like an angry owl with any exhaust mods. Then again, most youtube videos shows the cars revving like mad when parked. As opposed to having load on the engine.
I keep planning on unbolting my exhaust, and putting a few washers in between both flanges to see how it would sound.

If you're having something relatively simple done, and its the company's bread & butter (i.e. two box system, catback, to go into existing bumper cutouts) I cant see how anyone could bugger it up.

Its easier than you think...

Doesnt take much for the fitter to be lazy, and grab a 2.5" box off the shelf because he doesnt have a 3" one the right size and cant be arsed ordering it in.

You've now got a hidden restriction in your exhaust thats pretty difficult to find and are non-the-wiser, until some point later you may or may not discover the exhausts hurting your performance.

Or similarly use the crappy compression bender instead of the proper mandrel bender to produce all the bends in the pipework.

I posted in another thread of a lovely sounding 335d exhaust:

They can sound pretty awesome, though granted you will get a bit of turbo whistle (you can hear it earlier in that video if you wind it back to the start), its not really noticable inside the car.

Are these cars really in such a high state of tube that compressions in the bends would have an effect on performance? Or "noticeable effect" to put it correctly.

I actually saw them come up when I was searching (want new tips!). The garage looks like a normal MOT centre outside.

Its just about flow restriction. Any engine needs an exhaust that flows well enough for its particular state of tune, which is why a 330d system is bigger than a 320d and a 335d system is bigger than a 330d.

Look at the factory exhaust and you'll find all the bends are done with mandrels. The factory system is sized for minimal restriction on a stock engine. They could have used compression bends and larger pipework, but that would cost more and weighed more. So they do it properly.

It may be for instance that a 2.5" exhaust with mandrel bends would need to be replaced with a 2.75" exhaust with compression bends, to flow the same.

Of course if your going for the additional cost of the 2.75" system it seems silly to have it only flowing as well as a smaller one.
