DPF queries

afternool all - firstly let me apologise I know these questions have been asked before but every other thread says something different.

Firstly what is an acceptable level of soot to remain in the DPF before it should regen?

Using bmwhat app I noticed I had a fault code for particulate filter but nothing yet appeared on the idrive. I could see my DPF contained 43g of soot mass and I managed to force a regen using the app which cleared it down to 1.5g of soot mass. After another 15 miles the soot mass steadily rose to 26g... Why would this be?

What exactly are the required parameters for the DPF to regen without manual interventions.

Thanks again all.

DPF regen requires coolant to be over 75c, exhaust gas temp to be over 250c and no major fault codes.

if it really has collected 26g of soot in 15 miles it might indicate some issue with the engine producing far too much smoke, for instance a boost leak.

I think the soot is more of a calculated value however, it computes it from the backpressure measured across the filter.

Thank you for the reply that was very useful.

I believe bmwhat app can also measure boost pressure, what sort of boost would a mapped 330d be running? It's not an overly aggressive map and is around 280bhp I believe.

Is there anything else that could cause the soot to build up quicker than normal?

A boost leak could cause excess soot to be produced, as could a bad tune or some sort of sensor fault i guess.

Thanks for the help. It seems to be boosting okay but I checked the boost using bmwhat app - not sure how accurate this is but it hit 2.44 bar at 3440 rpm. Does that seem high? It also recorded torque at 404 lbs ft which seems about right. This was with me booting it either in 3rd or 4th.

Am I wrong in thinking any faulty sensors would give an error code?
