BMW web radio?

I'm thinking about a combox retrofit on my CIC system with the main feature I'm interested in is the Web radio.

Am I right in saying that this is similar to the Tunein app where I can stream Internet radio? What's it like, does it work well?

I'm thinking I'd rather do this than a dab retrofit.

Thanks

Thanks, why is USB required?

Seems like a good alternative to dab retrofit as you get more channels and probably better reception too.

I was always very dubious about dab because of the published bit rates used, but I have it's fitted to my f10 & I'm seriously impressed, sound quality is excellent (not that I have very discerning ears lol ) except when the signal drops & the channel goes totally awol

I haven't tried Web radio yet so I'll have to give it a go, but does it have any advantages over dab, other than huge choice of stations?

USB is used for connected app via your phone. Quality depends of station. Reception is just signal coverage of your mobile network.

Ok thanks,

So to use the web radio and any of the connected drive services, my phone needs to be plugged into the USB with the connected drive app running on the phone? Correct?

I use web radio and GoPro apps and those have to be connected with phone. For internet or bmw live, personal hotspot must be turn on and doesn't required USB.

Thanks again. I have googled this and you are correct.

The issue that I may have is that I have android phone. I have downloaded the BMW app from the play store and there is no web radio there.

The only apps it has are;
Audio player
Calendar
Last mile,
News,
Wiki

So I need to find out first if web radio does indeed work with android.

So to clarify this:

To use Web Radio from the iDrive, you must start an App on the phone and have hotspot enabled?

Currently I use the TuneIn app. The bit that annoys me, I cant just get in the car and start the Web radio like I can Bluetooth streamed music.

However it sounds like this dosent make it any better. Still need to get phone out and start an App?

All accademic... I dont have a BMW anymore...nor did I have iDrive! :P
More for info for the future. Hope to get an F11 in a couple of years.

Or do I need to have the TuneIn app open on my phone to access web radio?

Once connected drive is choosen and your mobile is pluged in, system will ask for run bmw connected app from your phone. Then all apps comes on screen, that's it.

Ok, but im assuming whatever app is showing on your phone are what apps are shown on idrive?

So if the connected drive app on my android phone doesnt show web radio, therefore it wont be available on idrive?

Android app is crap and does not give you much options.
Plus the fact that it has connectivity issues.
You move to apple for that or go down the dab route.

I'm still baffled by how dab is good quality for some people. I've listened to both in my car and the house and it generally sounds awful! (To me that is)
