X1 20D fuel mileage

The F48 X1 brochure for the 20D 190 HP X Drive on the UK website shows a combined EU fuel mileage of 57.6 mpg. What is interesting, the X3 on the same website shows the same combined mileage with the same 190 Hp diesel engine. The X3 weighs a good 550 LBS more. I would think the transverse engine layout of the X1 would be more efficient since the engine power does not have to change direction like it does in a longitudiinal engine layout. Any ideas why, is the ZF transmission in the X3 just that good.

Hmm good spot, a bit odd, both are great mpgs for their size.

Is the X3 that you're comparing to also xDrive?

If the X3 in question is RWD (sDrive) then there are some extra friction losses for the X1's AWD xDrive platform that could account for the similarity in mileage even though the F48 weighs less.
