Cayman S VS M3 Sedan
Hello forum, this is my first post and I have a question. I'm thinking about trading in my 07 Cayman S 6MT for M3 sedan or Coupe. The thing is I leased 335i Coupe with Step a couple of month ago and I don't know if its worth having two 3 series instead of having a P car in the garage. I'm definitly keeping the 335 until my lease is up. What would you do? M3 has been my dream car and I just couldn't wait over the last year and half. It's not that I'm not satisfied with my cayman but M3 is obviously a better choice because it's cheaper, faster and ovarall better car. And its less flashy! My local dealership is taking orders on M3 starting early march. I have a 2 weeks to decide..
Any comments are welcome. Thank you guys Here's a picture of my car. |

i was thinking the same -- m3 or cayman S for the $70k price....but need the extra space from time to time and camyan only has 2 seats, period. So for me came down to practicality......M3 is of course much faster than Cayman S but Prosche will have the much better steering .....but for a daily driver, i think the M3 is a better ride....and yes as someone noted, more understated than the Porsche....which is also a plus at least for me...

I just sold my 2007 Cayman S to make room for an M3 Sedan. I liked the CS very much but found it spent too much time parked because I inevitably have a couple of kids with me wherever I go - thus the M3 Sedan. Sounds to me like you really haven't settled on what you want yet. Unless you have so much money that you don't care, trading in and out of these cars will kill you from a depreciation and transaction cost perspective; the market for used Caymen is not good at the moment. Ask yourself what you are really looking to achieve. Do you really need a back seat? If not, the combination of a BMW and Porsche could be great. On the other hand, if you only need one car with a back seat swap the 335 for the M3. Need to have an auto on one of your cars (say, for your wife) then get the M3 with the new gearbox. It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish...

My dad recently bought an M coupe, and we looked very hard at the Cayman S. It is, no doubt, an awesome car. Very fast, great handling, looks great coming down the road.
With that said, there was some sort of factor that neither of us could explain that kept us coming back to the M coupe. It was like the "wow" factor, I think. I anticipate that this would also be present with the M3--it was like more raw and more fun to be in the BMW at the same time. The Cayman S just didn't have that factor, for us anyway. Either way you go--you're gonna have a great car. Good luck with the decision.

I say, keep the cayman and get an M3 when the lease for your 335i ends. That'll be a hell of a combo. M3 and a cayman s

Since I have an 06 M3 I was thinking of getting a Cayman S or used 997 instead of an E92 M3 when the time comes. Not because I don't like the M3's, I do, I just figured that the P-car would offer a different experience. I have 3 kids so the back seat in the E92 M3 would be useless for all 3anyway. I've read so many good & bad things about 997's so I don't know what to think about that, the back seats would come in handy in a pinch. I've read that the Cayman is great but should be better and there is no back seat at all. I like the idea of the mid-engine and personally I think the Cayman looks great, it looks like a mini-exotic to me. With the E92 M3 I'll know what I'm getting but then again it's just going to be a more powerful, heavier version of what I have now so the prospect of getting one doesn't get me as interested as one of the P-cars. With my E46 M3 I could fit my 3 kids in the back but the E92 only seats 2. I'm not that crazy about the E90 M3 for some reason. I think I'd rather just get the 335i and save a few bucks if I went for a sedan. The Sedan just isn't as exciting as the thought of owning a P-car or the E92.
So to answer your question I guess I'd keep the Cayman S over the E90 M3 and possibly over the E92 M3 as well.

I'd say keep the Cayman and do whatever you can to get rid of the 335 and get the M. As a former 986 owner I'm a big fan of the overall handling of the Boxster/Cayman. In fact, once I pay off the new M in three years, the plan is to get a "weekend" Boxster.

I will keep the Cayman. But I understand why you're even considering the idea. Or maybe you're not that satisfied with the P car. Try not driving the CS for a month, see how that feels. =)

have you tracked your Cayman S?
get a E90 M3 to replace the 335 in 18 months, unless you push your cars on the street and track whats the point of two high end 3 series? from the drivers seat they look nearly identical, whereas the Cayman is a very different driving experience, 600 pounds less, tossable, very happy at the track nipping at 997s, vettes and more powerful cars. unless you just want the newest M car...then just get the M3, but I think you'd be shorting yourself. I bought my CS as a temporary car until I get an M3, now I'm planning to keep it and sell my other 3 series family sedan, I'm going with a sedan, 414HP 4-door daddy car, and use the CS as a weekend, date, errand, track car. calling the M3 cheaper doesn't make sense, your going to take a bath on a 07 CS compared to buying a new M3. An average 2007 CS is worth about $50K, you'd need to make up $10-20K all in. |

I would buy the m3 and sell the cayman... lol... i did ;D
I ve been driving a caymanS till the end of 2006. Then i bought a boxsterS ( for the summer of 2007). now i ll sell this and buy the m3. I belive that porsche looses nearly no value by the time ( here in germany), therefor i dont mind "costs", cause there are closely any costs. I advise you to do a testdrive on a m3 and decide after it. |

Dude I have a 997 and a 4.4 X5 appropriately modified by as many of the Dinan mods I can get. I have an e92 M3 on order now and my advice is to keep the Cayman and trade the 335i for the M3. Remember the 335i is almost 90% of the e46M3 as far as performance wise so you don't really need both the M3 and the 335i which i guess is why you're asking here in the M3 forum.
Dude keep the Cayman its the track star of them botha nd the new M will no be too shabby either! Besides you're Cayman looks too good to sell or trade! ~ IMHO

Thanks for your kind words guys.
I'm leaning toward to keeping the car because the fact that I just leased 335. But I do think that the key factor is to test drive the car once the dealership has a possesion of m3. This is how my car looks like. Anyways, I'll keep you guys posted. Again, I really appreciated it. |

What's wrong?
Too many people calling your Cayman S a "chick car"? Feeling hurt that its 0-60 times don't measure up? I can't believe someone with the funds to have both a 335i and a Cayman S has to ask "the internet" what do to..... If you don't like the way the Cayman S drives, get rid of it. Although I don't see how that could be -- it's a fantastic car. Although if you are a badge whore you will be insecure in it... because "it's not a 911" ... |
