Driving Route Recommendations

Due to pick up brand new 335dx m sport a week on Friday from Thorne thanks to BMW Aplphadrive scheme.

Will be getting train down from Edinburgh in morning and should collect around midday.

Can anyone recommend any particularly good roads/routes back from Thorne/Doncaster to Edinburgh, I will have the remainder of the day after lunch to make my way back so no need for me to rush or take most direct/boring route.

Old A1 to Northallerton,

Then Northallerton to Darlington using road via Croft.

Then at Darlington pick up the A68, just stop on the A68 to St Boswells area, then link over to the A7.

A scenic set of road with some bends and hills etc, they are some excellent ones around Yorkshire dales, however you would be going west not north and would end up doing M6.

Sounds promising. Will map it out.

Anywhere near Thorne for a good pub lunch near Thorne before I head off?

Personally I would stop at either The Angel at Topcliffe or the Black Swan (Mucky Duck) in Bedale.

Not sure around Thorne tbh, Beverely is nice but a bit off track.

The Angel is on route and great food.

I'd take the A1 up to Ponteland, then the A686 and A68 to Edinburgh. Though, the A68 could be picked up earlier as above.

I was a student in Newcastle some years ago. I had a summer job doing comparisons between the A1 and this route for gauging the need for future improvement works. I seem to remember that the A696 - A68 run was great fun, open sweeping road with good visibility for good progress. I really enjoyed it in the 1.2 Clio hire car they gave us some 15 years ago. We had to stick to speed limits but after a few runs we knew the road and made very good progress through the fun twisty sections.

I keep meaning to do this run again for pleasure at some point. Maybe linked in with the James Bond Skyfall drive up to The Highlands...

Just be aware of speed cameras.

Yes can't see past picking up the A68 in Darlington area and heading towards Hexham and then up through Jedburgh.

The A696 is a great road too, but then you'd spend more time on the A1. I'm up in Newcastle next week and then heading up to Perth afterwards and will be going A696 or A697. I love when I get out of the South-east of England with the car, and work are paying the fuel!
