I literally have been sitting in my office and figured I'd ask.

I downloaded the app, but need a password and username, none of which it allows me to set up, so I am not quite sure how this all works haha.

I believe you have to set it up first on line on the website.

I believe in Canada you need to set it up through BMW Assist.

Dumb question: do you have to be in the car to get it working or can I do it from the office?

I think if you have your VIN you can call them from anywhere.

Well this all initially started when I was told to push the SOS button and make the initial call to set things up.

I did so, but the guy on the line said that they have not received papers from the dealership yet.

I texted my salesman to do it. He got back to me the next day and said, "hey submitted your papers, youre good to go, password is 1234"

I didnt clue in at the time, but realized after that I used my username or email and that password and everything was registered and set up already in the app.

Yeah, I called the BMW Assist number and I was set up but (a) forgot the password I had used when sitting in the car (whoops); and (b) didn't know the email address had to be ALL CAPS.

App seems to be working now, but the car is far away so I can't see if any of the features are working if I send requests/etc.

i guess i will try it when i get my hands on my soon to arrive M4 i called the dealer one week after I ordered it to add the option of connected drive but said not possible.

My interest in the app is to unlock the car, but am curious if it allows you to start the car too ??? i dont want to carry keys anymore for anything !

To unlock the car, you have to contact BMW Assist. You can't use the app to unlock it.

The M cars come with connected drive but you can subscribe to the services individually anyway (traffic/internet/etc.).

I think the app supports lock/unlock as evident from the app screenshot. You could also call BMW assist to do that too.
Canadian M cars are not equipped by default with connected drive ($500 option). Maybe the U.S. spec ones do.

I think he means that the App will unlock and lock if you have connected drive, however if you do not, then you will have to phone BMW Assist to lock and unlock the doors.
