335 vs M3 Quarter Mile, we all agree?

I swear I am not trying to open old wounds here. But the M3 vs 335 thread was closed before I wanted to ask one final question which may bring the two camps together and helps my udnerstanding.

Does everyone form the M3 and 335 camp agree that up to the quarter mile the 335 might have an advantage and that after that the M3 will blast away?

And I am talking stock vs stock here.

Stock for Stock, the M3 should win by at least .5-.7 seconds and have a trap speed 7-10mph faster.

I do not doubt a significantly boosted 335i can out drag a M3, however, these crappy videos are hardly proof of that.

I didn't say they were proof, only that it's interesting as these are I believe the only comparison between the two.

A chipped 335 should be able to run 1/4 mile in the mid to high 12s range.

Don't forget how traction limited 335i's are. M3 gets wider rubber and it will be welcome. I had the wife's car at the strip, and launching this thing was a major PITA. Every technique I tried seemed to fail. I think my best time was a 13.7 IIRC. Now, the track was a little slick, but I think even on a dry track you are going to get copious wheel spin.

And I should add - there was a guy there with a chipped 335i and he could not get the car out of the 13s. It just spun.

If your wife car is stock, you've done pretty good with 13.7 I'd say. Have you seen the magazine times I posted?

The best bolt-on and drag tire QM I've seen posted is 11.2@121 so far for the 335i. There are many mid-high 12/108ish QM's posted with just a chip, or a chip and wheels/tires.

M3 is an M car,,,, 335i is not. . . . But I am sure some of you folks are correct, the M3 is the heavier, slower, more sluggish car. It just can't hang with the 335i and match its superior horsepower and handling. Those Motorsport engineers at BMW really should get their act together and build a real car!
Final note- if the M3 and 335i were priced exactly the same. 335i sales would be exactly -0- for the year. Everyone know it. Please, let's get off the comparisons already and move on.

Yeah I saw the mag times, but I know people have gotten stock ones in the low 13s, so I was a little dissappointed. On a clean track (where people aren't driving through the burnout box ) I could probably shave 3 or 4 tenths I think.

It will be interesting to see what the bolt-on M3s with drag tires can do. I am thinking mid-low 11s should be possible with exhaust, long-tubes, intake, cold-air, ECU.

Have people started upgrading the turbos on 335i's yet? Once that happens everthing's gonna change. That will be no small cost though. And I wonder how much the bottom end can take?

I think these comparisons are just fine as long as they take place on threads that have descriptive titles and in the M3 vs ... section of the forum, and don't spill over to unrelated threads in other sections.

changing the turbos on the 335 will be quite tricky because of the direct injection...

spend $2ok on the 335i and you still wont have an M car - nor will you have a dependable car, nor a warranty.....

Can't disagree. It will happen though. Or at least I'd put my $$$ on it happening.

Course, it might not be any cheaper in the end than a turbo'd m3. We'll see. I give it 2 years time before we see turbo upgrade packages (for both car).

Just make sure you remove the 335 at the back and exchange for Wanna-B M3!
