Let's face it pressing one button is hardly a toil. If they came on as soon as you woke the car up (wipers will work before engine start) then they'll be damaged if frozen to the screen in winter, for example.

I haven't seen a code for wipers other than for rain sensor sensitivity so I don't think it can be done.

As per xenon, ridiculous idea, especially when it's a button push on the end of the stalk!

Oooof, tough crowd.

I'd like the option to have 'on' as the default too.
I hear what people are saying about freezing/frost etc, but would have thought you'd have a choice.

Anyone seen mangled wipers due to 'auto on' at start up? Happened on my BIL's Jaguar with "auto on wipers", one frosty morning, an expensive mess of metal to sort out.

If BMW were so stupid as to have them on by default, I'd want them coded out as a top priority.

Not sure it'd be stupid. A large number of vehicles have stalk operated wipers that are left in auto - either by a twist or position 1. They can't all be wrong. In fact from what I can remember from owning or driving other cars BMW are the odd ones out in this regard.

Yep. Easy to turn on by pushing a stalk but if you go to your car on a frosty morning how do you turn them off before you switch on the ignition when everything is off?

As soon as you switch on the ignition the wipers get driven across a frozen screen unless you religiously remember to thaw them out first.

It is a daft idea to be fair.

73henny If it's a twist or stalk position you can turn it off before switching on the ignition by physically moving the stalk to off. You can't do that on a soft button.

Can see both sides if this argument and had a worry on this when I'd left my wipers on auto on my mondeo. Luckily the ice was not think so the wipers hadn't frozen on properly (and even though the mondeo had the very useful heated screen, they of course don't work instantly ) and any ice would always trigger the auto wipers to wipe.

What woukd be very useful would be if the automation of auto wipers was available but disabled if the outside temp is below, say 3c so there would be very little risk of them trying to trash themselves on a frozen screen) I believe the headlight washers are disabled in cold weather so would be similar to that. (I'm of course not suggesting the wipers or even the auto wipers are disabled in the cold, simply the automatic selection of autowipers on engine start!)

Presume putting the wipers to the 'maintenance position' (such that you can lift them both off the screen for washing etc would also disable this.

A bit off topic, but loosely linked....

And while we're on the automation and linking of features, what about an option to automatically select sport dampers setting each time you come back to a bit if road you always use it on? (Tesla do give you this option to automatically raise the ride hight each time you return to the place you last raised it)

Agreed. However I know I've forgotten in the past to turn the auto wipers off before turning the ignition on and either the wipers run harmlessly across the frost or are just 'stuck' by I assume a resistance shut off detection.
I would say that turning them off would be advisable. Perhaps the best option would be for it to be linked to the temp sensor?

So lets have it right 80% of the coding options available are simple push button changes and nice to haves. Agreed this is one of those options. you could argue it will destroy wipers in frosty conditions etc. U know what i say to that? Just push the button!

Quetion still stands, would be nice "for me" if its possible

Yep and a seagull shits on your screen when travelling at 60mph on a sunny dry day. Your 'always on' auto wipers spring into life and smear it all over the screen causing you to crash and die in a fiery inferno. Seems like a great feature.

I've coded a list of about 10-12 things. None of them are simple push button changes like the wipers.

I don't agree that single button push changes are pointless, the ASS permanently off is one of my favourite things I've coded!

However it doesn't come with any drawbacks like the above mentioned ones for wipers, and it comes in handy on every journey, whereas the wipers do only when it rains which is maybe 1 journey out of every 30 or 40 at most.

Garage List
On the seagull front or a bit off it anyway

There was a group of oxygen thieves who would egg cars- the idea being that your wipers in trying to wash off the egg residue would make a bigger mess forcing you to stop ASAP at which point said should have been abortions would run up and ask for the keys etc for your shiny pride and joy.

Advice at this point was not to put your wipers on but drive to a safe place to clean up your screen.

As said can't see any real advantages to auto wipers on as default

I had a merc with auto wipers, they were left in the auto position and never caused any problems, they never came on at ignition and only ever came on when it was raining, and the sensitivity was spot on. It was one of the few things that worked better than my BMW

All the people on here saying its a ridiculous idea.. I ask you one question.

Have you ever owned a car that has completely automatic wipers that are always on and ready to wipe????

I have, two cars, 5 years and 75,000 miles actually and it works impeccably.

And as for the icy days.... Both cars I had were clever enough to realise it wasn't rain and didn't attempt to wipe.

Or alternatively for those who worry FAR too much... Just move the stalk to 'off' before you start the car on the 30 days a year it freezes..... and enjoy 335 days of never touching your wipers.

Hahahahaha.

You are seriously quoting this?

I've also heard there is a man in a red suit that visits every well behaved child on the 25th of December...

Really Teaston?

I went out in my car twice yesterday, twice today and it rained each time.... Where do you live? Can't be the UK? I believe it's fact that the average rainfall is 1 in every 3 days in the UK....

Same as my old Audi A6. Left in auto on, never any issues and the sensitivity worked better than BMW.

That said the Audi handled like a turd, so I'm very willing to suffer pushing a button

That's one of the points here - on a bmw the auto wipers on/off is a switch that returns to the same position - thr only way things would work woukd be if the one switch could toggle through auto on, auto off, 'auto on next time I turn the car on'

Incidentally, the always return to standard position stalk also means you can't inadvertently leave the wipers in a constant on position next time you start the car.
