Hit a deer tonight

Driving on some back roads a huge deer jumped in front of me and I couldn't stop in time. Looks like just the windshield and hood are damaged, plus all the glass on the dash. Pretty pissed

Hope your not stressing, not like you did anything wrong.
These cars are made for driving not sit in the garage from dusk to dawn.
Actually damage doesn't look to bad.
Don't see any blood, deer killed or did he run off?

Sorry to see it

A truck tire unravled in front of me today - nothing as bad as a deer though.

Im not sure about the deer now, it kind of rolled off the car so maybe it's just hurt. I didn't stop right where I hit it...in case it wanted revenge!

Maybe not the most popular or politically correct view but, I am not a big fan of wildlife. Especially that which is large enough to have a negative affect on safe motoring. We need to set priorities.

Had this happen years ago. Stupid deer hit me running at full speed and did $1000s of damage to my new at the time Acura. Glad to see it was just the hood and the windshield for you. Was the whole front end for me. You have my sympathy.

No consolation

daveg520

Being a Z owner for many years, so called friends would forward this to me.

I'll pass this thread forward http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=240912

In both cases, (you and and the Z driver) survived, (poor dear), so take a deep breath and realize how lucky you are that a car you are driving protects you against such animal attacks

That's awful. Just be happy that YOU (and anyone that might have been with you) are ok. It sucks, but the car can be fixed.

So, pray tell, what would you have done to eliminate the risk? Electric fencing running alongside every paved road? Big honkin' chromed deer whistles (that don't work) mounted in your lower intakes? Someone with a rifle riding shotgun (sic)?

Deer (and [insert pretty much any other mammal here]) were here long before humans learned to use their opposable thumbs to build things like spears, bows, roads, and BMWs. Pretty sure they have just as much of a right to be on a road as you do. After all, we built the road in their way because, you know, they were around before the road was ...

(To the OP: glad you weren't hurt. Like someone else said: the car can be replaced. You can't.)

One other thing - always reading how cars are styled with pedestrian safety/collision performance ( think due to european regulations ) these pictures particularly the hood are interesting, looks like the grill area deformed but sprung back perfectly and the hood dents seem to show the deer didn't get caught on a radiator or engine metal valve cover.

Oh man, that really sucks. But, it looks easily repairable. Could've been a lot worse:

One could just as easily make the argument that rats have been around a long time and have just as much right to be here as we do. Deer are pests that do not mix well with humans in densely populated areas. They destroy crops, collide with cars, carry disease and have no natural predators in most places outside of the western states. The harsh but realistic answer is to sharply cull deer populations where these conflicts exist.

And I have lost entire crops to deer, been infected by Lyme disease, and had multiple deer collisions. So I am definitely grouchy about this.

I don't mean to partially derail the thread here ... but yes: rats have just as much of a right to be on a road as deer. Sure, rats can be deemed as pests -- and, by your point of view and experience, deer can be, too, and we have the power as the inhabitants of the top of the food chain to do what we can to control both.

The difference here is that your farm, etc. is private land. Most roads are public. If you use something that you own, you have ultimate control and can, say, hire someone to wield a rifle in the passenger seat and kill as many varmints as you want. If you use something in the public domain, you take a bigger risk because you're not in control.

(Besides: I'm pretty sure if rats or deer could talk, they'd describe humans as exponentially bigger pests than either of those species are to us. And by the way: I partially own a lakeside cabin on Kokanee Lake in eastern British Columbia, where deer crossing roads is simply part of regular daily life -- and have been in a car that has hit not just a deer, but also a moose.)

Glad your ok. I grew in no. eastern PA and know it can be pretty dangerous. I remember my friend hitting a deer driving back from night skiing in NY and it was snowing.

Did you keep it! I love venison!!!

Based on that windshield damage it seems like it could have been a lot worse. Looks like he tried to jump out of the way, otherwise maybe not so lucky. These 2s can take a beating though, very safe. It happens, and the glass and hood will be easy to fix. Hope your insurance takes care of it no question asked.
