New car questions.

I picked my m235i last weekend. The girl that goes over iDrive features didn't seem to want to spend much time going over everything except setting up my cell phone, and I figured I'd figure it out...eventually. Then I went of to a friends who's wife has a 2013 535 to go over iDrive. He went over most things.

But I have few of things I questions he didn't know.

1. After setting the radio stations to the 8 buttons how can I select (scroll) the 8 stations on the steering wheel. My ZHP had an Up and Down arrow for this and + and - for volume. I only see the + and - for volume. I'd rather switch radio stations on the steering wheel. Can I?

2. We popped the hood and I didn't see an oil dip stick. He thought you probably use the oil levels displayed in iDrive display. Did I miss the dip stick when I looked in the engine compartment?

BTW: I was surprised to see some space on left and right side of the engine in the engine bay.

3. Is the a specific m235 iDrive manual?

thx.

2. No Disptick. It is calculated electronically on the iDrive.

1. You can use the scroll wheel on the right of the steering wheel to browse through media displayed on the screen between the gauges.

2. No dipstick. Its a common complaint as people physically like to see the color of their oil.

3. Not sure about an iDrive manual. I'd suggest youtube.

1. You can use the scroll wheel between the + and - on the right side of the steering wheel. It will scroll ur last selection, so if you set ur Presets/SatelliteRadio/FM etc to one of ur 8 buttons, just press it once and the scroll wheel should show selection of what you pressed (Presets/SatelliteRadio/FM/etc) on the dash and just click the wheel to select

3, There is something that can be considered an iDrive manual. It comes with your user manual. It is well documented and should serve your purpose for most of the things that you need to do on your car.

You can also get the BMW iDriver's guide as an app for the iPhone and other devices. And if you sign up at BMW USA it will be available to you on their main web page.

One thing about the 8 buttons: if you lightly touch the buttons and then slide your finger along the buttons, you will see a preview on the display as to what each button does.

1: There is a distinction between Presets and the 8 buttons. Presets are stored in a list (which fits up to ~30 or however many it is, I don't actually use it) and can be cycled when in presets mode.

The 8 buttons can also be used to store almost any feature within iDrive (which IMO is much more useful). When navigating iDrive, select the menu item you want to store and press and hold the button and it will bookmark that page. In my case I use the 8 buttons for things like last GPS destinations, TPMS, Sports Displays, Incoming Text Messages, etc. I use the iDrive knob for scrolling between radio/XM channels since it's much easier than reaching over and using the keys.

As mentioned if you forget what the keys do, just touch it lightly without pushing it down. They are touch sensitive and will show you the currently programmed feature.

Incoming text messages?! What type of phone do you have? If it's an iPhone running, iOS 8, please share your setup method!

I use the 8 buttons for phone numbers. Since I have so many contacts, frequently dialed numbers are very convenient to have there. I don't have Nav, so my preferences may be different if I had. Just figured I got the 30 presets, so no need to waste space on those precious 8 buttons.

The office functionality supports both iOS and Android. Emails are a bit weird. When I had my iPhone 5 with iOS7 I had to use a jailbreak Bluetooth mod which allowed it to properly push all the notifications over bluetooth. Then the car would receive texts and emails.

For Android L I am only getting text messages which is fine since I have a smart watch and can see emails and other messages if I really need to.

But yes, it's a very handy feature. You should also be able to respond (while parked?). Responding on Android does not work (at least not while driving), haven't tried it with iOS yes.

I am not 100% sure on the F22 what features are part of the enhanced bluetooth, tech package, or standard - so YMMV. I had the tech package on my F30 and it also worked, but I know some functionality was broken out into the Enhanced Bluetooth (which can be enabled via coding).

Thank you pikcachu and cyberdemon!

I read through the referenced thread and discovered that I need the enhanced BT option for "office" features that include text messages and email. Unfortunately, I did not order this option

I read about people coding it, but I've never been a coder and I don't know what it does to the warranty if discovered.

There are no worries about coding. There are a lot of people on these forums who can probably do it for you locally. It simply enables those features of the software.
