what do you guys use to transport your bikes?
yesterday i finally tried out the trunk mounted bike rack my wife bought me,. im not very confident in it as i kept seeing it shift when going around turns and im also not too fond of having the padding rub against my paint.
im not real crazy about transporting my bike on the roof but it seems like a much more secure option. so im looking for input on roof racks and bike carriers. what are you guys using?

Thule roof rack. The roof has the mounting points already in it, can't get much more solid and secure.
I use a fork mount currently, although I've been interested in trying out the sidearm mount so that I wouldn't have to take my front tire off.

Don't use the trunk racks. I used it once for a 15 minute ride to LSU lakes and after I went home it bent my trunk edge slightly near the window. Also I can see the part where the pad's laid on the trunk messed up the paint a little (barely noticeable)

Blanket on rear seat - front wheel off and set the bike inside. 59cm frame fits easily. I've fit 2 bikes inside with a bit more care. This was in a E90 and now a F30.

Ran a roof rack on a WRX for 12 years and didn't want to do that to either of BMWs we have now. The X1 has a hitch using a aluminum Kuat 2 bike rack.

If you have a hitch, the hitch mounted racks work very well. Easier than loading a bike on a roof and it won't damage your car like the trunk mounted ones will. The roof racks do work great though, just be careful parking in garages.
FWIW, I've had 2 instances where the trunk mounted one failed. Once on a highway, we had 3 bikes on a friend's car and the weight basically pulled one of the metal brackets straight and we heard a crash and there were 3 bikes tumbling down the highway. Another time, with another rack, we were rounding a corner on a mountain and the rack rolled over and came loose and the bikes bounced off the side of his car. This was years back and the car was a POS, but I'd hate to have that happen to a car I cared about. |

How do you like the sidearm mount? I'm currently using the fork mount wouldn't mind not having to take my front wheel off.
How it it security wise? The fork mount locked would be pretty difficult to defeat if someone wanted to steal the bike, short of destroying either the whole rack or bike. Also how is it taking corners quick and driving fast on the highway. Sometimes I get a little too spirited on twisty roads on the way to trails

I'm open to ideas, but who knows how I would mount my Gary Fisher bike on either the roof or the trunk, since I have a trunk spoiler and a hard top convertible that doesn't need any more reasons to fuck up than it already has in the past...
Most likely the fiance's GLA will be the hauler... |

I might try it, but with my luck the damn thing will fly off the back of the car and into somebody behind me LOL....I never trusted those damn things. Will look into it though.

Some company makes those suction cup mounts that are supposed to be good. I'd be a little nervous about them, but i've read good things. I think a hitch mount is the most solid and convenient way to go, although would also require the most modification to the car. I'm not sure how I'd feel security wise either. Also it leaves the bike open to being destroyed if you're rear ended.

Security wise, its just one arm that holds down the front wheel. I mean i would never leave it out overnight, you probably could just deflate the tire and slip it under the arm but that it would be pretty obvious to someone your trying to jack it. Regardless, i recommend it. Its easy to take a bike on and off and its pretty sturdy. I used it while in PC, Utah and drove many times down to Moab and to Norcal. ...My bike was stolen in norcal from my garage that my dumb f**king roommate left open. |
