Emissions testing/research study

I received a letter in the mail from a local testing center. They want to borrow my F30 for a couple days for emissions testing on a dyno. In exchange, I get...
  1. $500
  2. BMW loaner
  3. Full tank
  4. Wash (not that I would let them)

I get these all the time for my other cars and normally throw these in the trash. This one came with a second message on BMWNA letterhead, indicating its a collaboration between the EPA and BMWNA Engineering.

I'm actually considering this, any reason I shouldnt?

If someone/any company asked to borrow my 435i for dyno testing for a couple of days for only $500, I would definitely say no. Who knows how those fools will treat your car. However, if a company like AWE wanted to borrow my car for a couple days and would offer me their $1,750 full exhaust installed I would say F-ck yea.. $500 is chump change, and you deserve more.

I'd do it. No questions asked. $500, free gas, and a wash, definitely.

Mike, this is great news. I know some dyno BMW enthusiasts (AKA thugs) in your area who need to borrow a 335i GT.. They will give you $500 for your car for 3 days and provide you a full tank of gas.. Thanks for being a volunteer.. P>S if you don't get your car back please call 1-800-noQ-askd

If they were gonna put it on a dyno that'd be fine. GEICO wouldn't appreciate me renting it out for street driving.

This was my initial thought. I think I'd want more than $500 for that kind of access to my car.

You don't actually think this is real? If so, you're being true to your forum name ...just kidding. I wouldn't respond. Letterhead can be faked very easily. The question to ask is why wouldn't they just use one of the thousands of BMW company cars, but instead ask for yours.

If they wanted me to observe while they test my car for a couple hours, for $500+ some Dyno results, I might do it. But I wouldn't let them take my car where I don't know what they are doing with it for any amount of time.

This offer is WAY too fishy as others have noted. Google the name of the outfit making the offer AND contact BMW yourself to get the real story. If you decide to proceed without checking this out, you will find you car in Mexico shortly after you leave it with them - bank on it.

I'll probably give BMW a call tomorrow and get in detail the insurance coverage while it's in their hands. Here's a scan of the letters. A little Googling shows this company works on other cars as well, as other boards have seen them too.

Update

Sorry to revive this thread, but thought I post a update. I called BMWNA and confirmed the offer is genuine, so opted-in to program and was selected.

They will be picking up my car up at my home and driving it to the BMW VPC in Oxnard. At the same time, I'll be getting a 535 to drive for approx. 2 weeks. From what I understand, you can get a 335i, 535i, or 750i based on scheduling.

Some interesting points:
  • Car will not flat bed to/from VPC, it will be driven
  • Mileage incurred (200mi plus transit to/from VPC) counts against your lease
  • BMW is responsible for damages while it's at the VPC
  • ATDS is responsible for damages while car is in transit
  • You can opt out of having your car washed upon return
  • In order to be eligible, car must be stock and cannot have any major engine or emissions repairs
