What the sh*t is this?

Hey all,

Hoping you can help me identify something weird I noticed today while washing the car.

This is the rear bumper. It looks like a little plastic tape-like material is poking out from the panel gap between the bumper and the body.

It's placement is nay affected by any light tugs - it's stuck. Don't want to pull on it too hard for fear it might come out more. I feel like it's a weather seal or something. Any ideas?

Never been rear ended or anything. Car is garaged.

I have that on my M235i as well! It started getting worse as the time passed. I haven't done anything with it yet as it's not that visible unless you are looking directly at it. I am thinking about trimming it down somehow or maybe go ask a professional what should be done about it. It seems to be some type of adhesive that holds the fender somewhere (or it could be weather related as you said). I feel like there is a lot more of it so it shouldn't be any trouble at all if you cut/trim it off. You are the only other person besides me that I have seen have this issue. It is a bit annoying to look at though...

The white tap looks to the remainder of white protector delivery film which was covering the exterior paint work when it left the factory. Who ever removed the film at your dealer didn't remover the film completely. You'll properly find it will just pull off if you can get enough to pull at.

I have that same issue too! Glad I'm not the only one who's seen it. My tape appeared after my front and rear right tires hit a nice sized pothole on a freeway on-ramp (so I was going pretty quick). But I haven't noticed it getting worst. When I go to the dealer in a month or so I'm going to have them take a look.

Looks like the protective film from shipping. I would just try to peel it away, maybe use a pair of tweezers for grip.

If youre a DIY kind of person you could try to loosen the bolts inside the fender liner so you can pop the bottom edge of the bumper out then peel it off too. But I would just yank on it - that's most likely what the dealer will do.

Your exterior panels are not weather sealed together.
