Rumor: M4 CSL moniker returning (not M4 GTS)? Not likely.
BIMMERPOST NEWS Rumor: M4 CSL moniker returning (not GTS)? The anticipated and already spied lightweight and more powerful special M4 model will return the "CSL" name, instead of the "GTS" name given to the previous generation M3 coupe, claims Automobile in their M4 Safety Car ride-along review. While a return of the CSL moniker would be cool, the issue with this claim is that the "M4 GTS" name has already been seen on official BMW documents -- see: http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1106499 (image below). Of course the name could always change before its official announcement and reveal, but if BMW refers to it as the M4 GTS already, we'd bet on that name sticking. Quote:

This is really getting interesting now. Anyway, a 220lb weight saving coupled with an 8% increase in power and torque should mean that the CSL/GTS edition will be a blast to drive on the track.

Wont be a 220 lb weight different. They couldnt even take that off the E92 and the e92 was a bit heavier than the f8x. Would think more along the lines of 100-150 lbs.

They spent GOBS of money dropping weight on the f8x and managed 100-120 pounds on average. (seats, CF driveshaft, lithium battery) There's no way there's another 200 pounds sitting around just waiting for more lightweight application to readily fall off.

I don't believe they can do it using lightweight materials alone, even at $140k. I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

Lighter exhaust (Akra maybe?) will be a decent amount of weight The regular seats usually weigh a ton still I'm sure No rear seat I wouldn't be surprised if that alone is not 80 lbs or so. Then you add things like Nav/AC delete, aluminum panels, more CF.... Hell for that kind of money, that's what I would expect them to do. P.S. I like the CSL naming better than the GTS

Would be awesome to see the CSL moniker back! It just fits so much better to any BMW Sport Coupe than 'GTS'.
Maybe the M4 CSL will get water-injection like the safety car as well...

I was just going to post this. Definitely a no-brainer to go for the gt3 over this at a similar price point.

After that, yes, you can strip content like nav/ac/sound system/backseat/carpeting and get lighter. My point was not that 80-100 pounds couldn't be removed with alot of money and effort. My point was 220 pounds can't be removed without stripping content while meeting safety and emissions requirements. I would LOVE to be proven wrong on that but take a look the efforts undertaken by Porsche, Corvette, and others at stripping weight out of their already lightweight models.

I certainly hope it does not retail for $140k. That would be ridiculous.
Lets see when BMW gets the point, instead of foolishness like 'exclusivity' they should mass produce a $100k car that performs like a GT3 and have it available during the entire run of M3s. Of course when you make 50 units the price is stupid, then everyone will hate on it because it's too damn expensive and costs more than a GT3... |
