220i Convertible

At last just picked up BMW's demo 220i convertible for weekend and first to drive which BMW promised a few weeks ago. Our convertible is still waiting in Germany for shipping.

I also yesterday picked up a new 1 series replacement due to on going issues over 5 months with mine. BMW was great and have driven many BMW demo's over the past 6 months. I did like the 320i GT X drive and almost changed but like our 1 series as more sporty.

I'm not going to lie…..I really like that 1 series hatch. When are they going to bring cars like that here?

Separately, congrats on the 220i convertible. I have heard nothing but good things from that trim/engine level.

Wish the 220i convertible were available in the US. You can get an A3 vert with the 1.8 for several thousand less than the 228i convertible. However, if BMW offered the 220i convertible here, I believe it would sell, and importantly for BMW, would bring in more customers to the dealers. In other words, verts are becoming extinct and part of the reason is the high price of convertibles across the board and this might be one way to save them.

Being Saturday we have had the demo convertible out for a 300k drive and liked every k of the drive. I would have more than liked the drive if my dealer hadn't deleted sports suspension on the demo as at times the car didn't corner all that well and tended to wallow like a boat over some parts of the drive. Our's will have sports suspension and I wouldn't be without it.

I found the wind breaker was not any better than not installed so will be giving it a miss purchasing.

BMW will still not allow the roof to be closed from outside the car with the key or Comfort Access System. My Z4 was the same and was/is a pain.

-O rings went twice in the gear box
-Gear box replaced but never had the car more than 3 days back so don't know if this worked as it took 3 weeks normal driving for the O rings to leak.
-Cooling fan and control unit was replaced twice due to fan coming on while car was in our garage and flattened the battery. The car would have been in the garage for 24 hours and fan would just come on at night or in the morning.
-Tow-bar electrical control pack failed twice.
-Plus inspection checks.

It was just a one off faulty car as their has been no other 116i off the same boat with these problems. I've owned 7 BMW's and 6 being great. Some problem at assembly must have happened. I always expect one or two problems over 3 years but not all these over 5 months.

Hold lock bottom down hard with in several feet of the car. Top should go up. If not there is a legal issue, but can be coded to work regardless.

It worked I didn't hold the lock button down long enough

The windows do

A convertible owner said he could not remove his head rests well they come out easy just like the coup just by pushing in the side clip.

Rear visibility is fine, a lot better than some have said and head rest do not need to be removed to see. A lot better than my Z4 was.

Definitely don't need any more than a 220i as speeding around in a convertible is not what they are about and it's actuarially nice just to cruise which we did again today. One problem we are heading into winter so tee shirts and shorts with top down will not last much more this month. Our 220i car is due in May so it will properly not be out much until spring. We get done to 50f during some winter days and it's cold for us. ⛅️

I found it didn't but I could be comparing with my Z4 as the wind was totally block with the blocker installed from coming from behind. I didn't try with the windows up.

The rear camera is in a different place than my 1 series so it loses some of the view down due to sitting above the rear bumper where as the camera on the 1 series is on the face of the bumper same line as rear Park Distance Control sensors.
