G11/G12 BMW 7 Series M Sport or M770i Spotted?

BIMMERPOST NEWS
G11/G12 7 Series M Sport or M770i Spotted?
73
COMMENTS

Although the next generation G11/G12 7 Series (G11 = short wheelbase / G12 = long wheelbase) has already been seen in its entirety (photos below), we've yet to see a model wearing the M Sport package, until now.

The M Sport front bumper and side skirts sets this prototype apart from previously spotted 7 Series. If you look closely, you'll also see quad pipes within the exhaust tips. Compare this to the standard 7 Series prototype, which is also pictured below.

If this was the actual rumored M770i, it would be difficult to tell based solely on the prototype's cosmetics as BMW's M Performance Automobile models also wear M Sport body kits. Previous rumors have speculated about a possible M770i xDrive powered by a twin-turbo V8.

The G11/G12 7 Series is built on BMW's new CLAR (Cluster Architecture) platform which underpins the next 3, 5, 6 and 7 Series models, and the next the X3, X4, X5, X6 and X7. It combines carbon fiber with high strength steel and aluminum to achieve what is expected to be significant weight savings.

Thus far, the following models and engines is known (from the upcoming BMW pipeline thread):

G11:
  • 50iX is the only potential short wheel base 7 series for the U.S.
G12:

The 740Li and 750Lxi begin production this July-August, followed by the 750Li which begins in November later this year.

The interesting G11/G12 options list discovered so far includes:

- LED lights standard with laser optional
- B&W audio
- Advanced parking assist
- Most optional wheel styles will be bi-color (I'm guessing similar to i cars?)
- Next gen drive assist
- Wifi hotspot
- i8 style display keyfob
- selective headlight beam (I'm sure everyone expected that)
- active steering still there for the clueless
- new climate related options: "heating comfort" and "ambient air" packages
- automatic parking with remote control
- touchscreen (confirming what was suggested by the recent spyshots)
- new drive assist is called "active comfort drive"
- gesture control (feel free to guess what this one might do)
- rear passenger oriented options will provide heated/massaged/ventilated lounge chairs and online entertainment
- wireless charging for phones

As a diehard bmw fan I can honestly say Id still rather have an S class. The tech is great , but it's lacking in the looks dept . Looks like a refreshed 5 series but longer .

Agreed. Exterior is a bit...dull to the say the least.

This is a major disappointment inside and outside. BMW is in a deep design rut and can't get itself out, or just wants to play it safe, one or the other.

The cars should look much sharper and more cutting edge in this day and age. If you told me this car was designed in the year 2000, I would believe you. I'm not necessarily referring to the headlights or other specific details, but the overall uninspiring shape and direction of the whole.

Agreed. This is the class where Merc just nails it hard.

All I care about is how they've used carbon fiber to reduce weight.

+1. Very disappointed for BMW. It looks more like a LCI to me than a whole new car. Both inside and outside lack depth and the "new" tech do not excite anyone anymore. The Audi A3 and Chevrolet cars have wifi 4G hotspots already. I wouldn't be surprised if BMW calls for a LCI much sooner to address the shortcomings of this new car like it did with the Bangle 7 series of the early 2000s. What a disaster.

CF is just a publicity stunt for bmw. This car will only weight 150kg less than the outgoing model - so they say but my now sold f25 x3 was suposed to be 25kg lighter than my 1st gen x3 and I swear it was a good 45 - 60kg heavier - but audi without any CF got its Q7 300kg lighter and the Jag XF again without any CF is way lighter than the outgoing gen (not sure how much but i think I read +100 kg. Its like organic products at supermarket. You pay extra for them but did you you farmers can still label products organic if they use pesticides etc for emergencies? Its bmw markting BS at its best.

This looks more like a double LCI, not a new model. The interior looks more or less the same as the current car. These huge, long headlights will surely ruin the aesthetics. I suppose BMW is planning a "sharper, better" looking 9 series, but by the time and if that comes out, I think they may lose a lot of sales to the S class and maybe the Audi Prologue based A8/9. And well, the 9 series may just be way too overpriced, and if so, it better be WAY better than the S class in driving, tech, comfort and looks.

Among the trio of German car makers, BMW has terribly lost in the styling department. Surely the others have some weird designs like the Merc GLE, but BMW has way more models that just look awkward and too similar to each other and seem to blend in with other cars on the roads.

I withholding my final assessment until I see the official release of this car, but I have to say that this blue car with the black wheels just doesn't look very inspiring. It's very boring to look at.

While I detest the looks of the rear quarter of the S class, especially from the side profile, the S class looks substantially better than this leaked, blue car. The S class coupe crushes both from a looks standpoint.

Compare to the current S-class, this G11/G12 7 series is a no-no for me.

At least the side profile seem to resemble the concept picture you've posted...

I just wish they'd make the headlight narrower or have some curvy design like on F3X. This just looks like Honda Civic with BMW kidney grill in the middle..

There was no early LCi for the E65/E66. The facelift arrived in early 2005. Exactly half way through the car's life cycle. Despite questionable styling E65/E66 were huge sellers and until the F01 was the best selling 7er generation.

Kills me to say it but the S Class looks so much better

Will hold out till I see in the flesh though as I have found that new BMWs don't take to photographs very well.

If it is a publicity stunt then why have we achieved the impossible with the accomplished i3 and i8? It is an achievement because we know of good authority Mercedes-Benz are 5-6 years behind with VAG at least 5 and Porsche at 10 years in building Carbon fibre bodies for volume models.
The weight of the new 7er will be disclosed very soon but i can tell you it is far lighter than an equivalent S-Klasse. And to think these similar savings will be passed on to the G30 5er. And eventually the G20 3er.

+1, I guess the production unit will have interesting features, but BMW should be caring for design a lot more, for their own good.

About the B&W sound, that is a great call. B&O is not audiophile class.

omg the car still did not come out and ur already jugding it
the same when the M5 F10 and M6 F12 came out
and when the M3 F80 and M4 F82
start to say it looks ugly
sounds horrible and stuff
and when they came out everybody loved them and bought them

whats funny is that when the mercedes s class spy photos was uploaded
on mercedes forum everyone said they hated it and would prefer a BMW and than when the new s class came out officially everyone loved it
so dont judge the car now but judge it when it comes out

and sorry for my bad spelling
but its cause im typing fast
