Port Installed Options: Do we get stock parts back?

I ordered an M235i with and LSD as a port installed option.

Just curious, will they give me the brand new open diff back?

Excellent question, I was wondering the same...

It would be nice if they returned the original new parts. I honestly believe that they DO NOT return the original new parts. I will be pleasantly surprised to learn that YES they do return the original new parts

Exactly how I answered this in my head before reading.

PIA are on the Monroney sticker, so it's as if the car was sold that way. For lease purposes, it changes the MSRP for residual value. For traditional sales, it means your car is valued higher (technically speaking) rather than as a modified vehicle.

This is in contrast to dealer add-ons, which are not part of the sticker and not used for residual value on a lease - BMW offers "adders" but these are generally a bad value unless the car is on the lot and optioned this way by the dealer. Then something is better than nothing, I guess.

I ordered a limited slip and this thought crossed my mind for a millisecond. Then I thought to myself..."nope."

What would I do with the original diff anyway?

You only get the parts if you do dealer install... but then you have to pay for the install...

The stock diff can easily fetch you around $500.

Yeah but good luck finding someone who needs one... Most in need of a new diff will likely have it done under some kind of warranty work, rather than some need to go 3rd party. You're more likely to end up holding on to that for a while.

Mine will be sitting in my garage just to have for whatever reason. I should have it back tomorrow with the diff installed. They said that there was some special grease that they needed to have ordered to pack into the area with the splines for the axles as per some BMW service bulletin dealing with the LSD. Apparently without this grease in it there could be a clicking noise coming from the diff. I even recall someone 2-3 months ago mention how they had the LSD installed and it was clicking and the dealer didn't know what to do so they replaced the whole diff again.

Just what I was thinking. Maybe in 10 years someone will need a stock replacement. Maybe...
