CF Rear Spoiler Install
Hey NW gang,
Quick question, I am expecting to take delivery of my F80 this month and I was planning on purchasing a CF Rear Spoiler. I have two questions: 1) Anyone have experience removing the stock spoiler and installing the CF spoiler? Is is something anyone can do without messing it up? 2) Any recs on a shop that will install for me without charging me an arm and a leg? Btw, I live in the Seattle/Bellevue area. Thanks!!! |

We have people who have those here so answers will be given by those. I doubt it has to be removed but to be honest I'm the biggest fuckup ever when it comes to cf (or other) parts. Specs so I know who I see on the road, I'm in Kirkland. Anna

The stock spoiler is easily removed with fishing line. Just pull it through, between the spoiler and the trunk, and it will come off. Its the residual 3M tape left there that takes a little bit of patience. Putting the new one one is simple if you are just using double sided tape. If you plan to use betalink, then it will be a little more involved. Either way, with my OCD, I wouldn't trust a dealer to do it correctly, so I'd probably do it myself.

Pretty easy to done. Definitely nothing a DIY on YouTube can't do. I've done it a few times easily. If you're using an OEM spoiler to replace it with, you're doing it with a breeze.

I don't know how that idea got stuck but I hope he doesn't read your response before trying and I will finally have a buddy I bad cf part installations! DIY. ... Go get the lip and put it on and stop giving other people advice Wah! Tiny edit. Now I remember how the image of leaving it under is stuck in my head. A friend of mine said it would be something I'd do. So, don't do that. Or ever listen to me on anything.

Thank you, you're too kind. My mechanic made me write him a note I'll never attempt putting anything on myself after he fixed my diffuser installation.
I'm pretty handy with everything else but apparently this damn car was made to kill my ego. Anyway, show up to our meets! We need new blood. @wah I will find the log. It was talked via IRC when you told the son story of your E92 spoiler installation.

Oh for fucks sake thanks. Now I'll be going through 3 years of IRC logs to figure this fuckup out! Thanks!
Someone did something like that, that's stuck as the right way and now I need to know who to kill. ... And there is a C63 in front of me when I'm driving the Audi. I'll kill ya later. Update: I remember wah, which means IRC is involved and I remember spoiler over an other and I have no idea how I've gotten that to my head. Op sorry for ruining your thread but at least my original sentence never ever rely on me works still.

Sorry the late reply guys but thanks for all the advice! Sounds like I'll give it a shot and hopefully I don't screw it up. Also thanks for posting the instructions! I'll let you guys know how it goes...or how it doesn't.

First, I thought maybe the hardest part was taking the spoiler off. It was difficult. I used the bondo spreader method in the IND video (with painter's tape) and it did take some time, but eventually was able to get it off. The next part was actually the hardest part. There was a crapton of betalink or whatever glue is on there which was really hard to get off. It took a lot of time and very liberal applying of 3m adhesive remover. When I mean liberal, I mean you have to continue to spray it multiple times even in some small areas. After finally getting all the glue off (not an easy feat), I cleaned up the area with isopropyl alcohol. After this dried, then I applied the 3m adhesive promoter. It was barely 60 degrees (minimum for the promoter) and I've been waiting for a good time to put this on for a few months now. Managed to pull back the 3m double sided tape in a few areas as suggested in the instructions and IND manual. Then, it was just lining it up as best you can and pulling off the tape. Be careful not to apply too much pressure on the spoiler as I snapped off the tape a couple times but was able to save it, but pull off slowly and it'll be ok. I then taped it down with some painter's tape and it's currently sitting for now. I didn't realize initially and I wish I did, that the leading edge didn't stick onto my trunk very well and I had to go back and push down repeatedly. So I had to go back and apply pressure to the leading edge again and it seems to be sticking. Hopefully when I check on it again tomorrow, it'll be fine. I'll try and get some pics up of what it looks like afterwards. Wanted to take pics during the install, however, my hands were covered in the damn glue. Just FYI: currently living in Long Island, but my wife and I will be interviewing for jobs in the next couple weeks in the Seattle area. Planning on possibly moving to Bellevue/Kirkland area this summer. GL with the install and lemme know if you have questions. Hope you find this useful . |

REMOVAL
Backup plan: Tape your trunk around your spoiler. Preferably get some tape under it too. Go to Harbor Freight or an auto parts store and get some bondo spreaders (size /hardness). Main Plan Try using either fishing string or floss to remove the spoiler. tie one side to a spoke on your rim. Go to the far side of the car and tie the other side of the string to a paint stick or some other easy to handle strong wood item. Don't use a hammer or other tool because if you drop that on your paint you are not going to be happy. Now swing the stick around the end of the spoiler (get under it) and pull it towards the tire you tied to. Essentially cutting the foam double sided 3M tape under the spoiler. Do it slowly so as to not stress the string, paint or your spoiler. You may still need to use a bondo spreader to do the finishing touches to get your spoiler off. Use rubbing alcohol to and your fingers (not nails) to remove the residual foam tape off your trunk. Do not use paint thinner, or nail polish remover etc. Try getting it off by rubbing your finger across the residual tap and letting it roll up. clean the whole area with rubbing alcohol (IPA) when done or if you need a little help on a piece. Install. Read the install directions twice. Do not think you are smarter than the instructions. Follow them to the tee. Don't do anything different. I installed mine and I made the mistake of taking the backing off before attaching the spoiler. That mistake made me then have to remove the spoiler (as above), manually remove the residual tape both off the trunk and the spoiler (which took hours), go online to find the right replacement tape and then I did it the right way and now it looks great.

Also, use the 3m tape. if they don't provide it, go get some. Put a good amount without gaps and make sure all surfaces are clean of dust and oils from your fingers. Some people say use an epoxy or beta link or whatever that is called. I have XPEL on my trunk and it's hard to stick things to it but my spoiler is only using 3m tape and it works great.

if you pull it off, you will have to clean all the residue off the spoiler and trunk. Really both will need to be flawlessly clean. Then go get new 3m tape and configure it just like the factory. put it on just like they say (leaving the red strip on until after install and then pulling it out to uncover the tape).
Use 2 people to keep firm pressure for a few minutes, then use blue tape to tape it down. about 40 strips. and leave it overnight in a garage (no moisture). That should do it well. if it is coming off then you didn't install it correctly or your trunk was not cleaned with IPA. this is critical. Don't wash for a day or so and be careful with water around the spoiler for a few days.

Also realized the one area that stuck well was the side where promoter was probably applied most. Looks like you really need a good amount of promoter as the other side came off easily. One sponge really doesn't do it. Probably need like 3 in total I think. |

LayZA55, I am not really following. I don't know what a sponge is in reference to our conversation...
First let me say, my car is an F82 and I have the BMW spoiler (real one not replica). I also have XPEL on the trunk so I needed to get as much "stick" as possible as it is harder to stick things to XPEL than just paint. I got ALL of the residue off the trunk (mostly my poor thumb rubbing it off) and then washed the trunk and then I cleaned it with 90% IPA (from walmart) and a microfibertowel. I cleaned it 3-4 times until it dissolved evenly so I knew there wasn't much of any wax or other residue. I purchased 3m doublesided foam "red" super strength tape. I don't remember the exact part number because I got anxious and went to a couple parts stores and bought locally but I think this was it. (03609) http://www.amazon.com/3M-03609-Scotc.../dp/B000BO913C I bought 3 but only ended up needing 2. I then cleaned and removed residual tape from the spoiler (this took forever and gave me a blister because of the rough CF). I must have cleaned it 5 times with IPA. I then mounted the tape like the factory in very long strips so you can pull the red backing off AFTER you put the spoiler on the car. On each end I put extra tape and there were NO GAPS. I pulled back the red backing a little so after the spoiler was pressed onto the trunk with 2 people we could pull the backing. we used blue tape as a guide so when pushing the spoiler on, we knew it was even and used our fingers as guides for the last few mm before touching the trunk with the spoiler. Pressed down, pulled the the red backing out, pressed down for about 4ish minutes and then while still applying pressure, put about 40 strips of blue tape perpendicular to the spoiler, attaching it to the top part and back/rear part of the trunk. Left it in the garage like that for 24 hours. You can use beta or promoter if you want but I didn't.
