Those of you who recommend search...

It seems like many here have little patience with newer posters who ask familiar questions. Well the reality is many newbies are not familiar with how the search function works and find it easier to ask the question. Also, for a complicated question there is no easy way to put in a keyword and find the exact topic without going through dozens if not hundreds of posts.

Here's an example:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=109862

What exactly is the poster supposed to search for?

My point is we (I'm fairly new here but have years of internet forum experience) should be more patient and helpful instead of ranting at a poster to use the search function.

Thanks, Mike.

sweet, I love threads that complain about members asking noobs to search.

First off, the question of income and "who bought your car" is a pretty assinine one, and has been beaten to death. Some keywords to for "income", "how much do you make", "how much do you earn"...etc you get the point

For the age question, for "age", "how old are you"....etc

I'm gonna have to agree with canucklion on this one.

If you were looking for demographics, that information is readily available online as was shared by one of the responders.

Maybe if you had asked a more E9x specific questions, you would've gotten more support of help. This remains a great BMW community and resource for all (noobs and veterans)...

It's not about patience. It's about building a useful archive for the greater good for everyone else. If the same topic is covered in many threads it makes it harder for someone to research it. It's much better when the same thread discusses a subject all the way. So search, find something closest to your question and then ask it in the same thread, don't start a brand new one.

I appreciate your response. Unfortunately you and everyone except noro felt the need for sarcasm in your response.

The post I pasted was just an example. Personally I find that post to be much to personal. Also, try to do a search for "how old are you". The search comes up empty as it's too many words. I'm not sure the search engine has this capability. KL2DC, I am not the OP on the demographic thread, I would never ask that sort of question here.

Thanks, Mike.

My response from the 1000th age thread:
How old are you and what do you do for a living?

What I think is really great is when vets of forums tell you to do a search and you do it, only to find outdated pictures (think the big red X) and information not relavant to what they are asking.

Not everyone enjoys or has the time to search through thousands of random posts to find what they are looking for. Some just want simple answers.
Just my 2 cents.

I agree somewhat, people just posting "Do a search", could just either answer the question at hand or move on without wasting a post. Most, however, want to bump their posts with worthless postings. It's the same on all forums I've been perusing. Search first, to respect the site, and if you don't come up with what you're looking for, someone will help.

I appreciate the thoughtful responses. This site is a great forum for BMW car lovers. I've learned a lot here in my short time. However there are times when the less respectful responses bother me. A little civility goes a long way.

Thanks, Mike.

Usually the police just use it to "up" their post count. It works too, just check out how many of thier thousands of posts are just wise-ass remarks to admittedly stupid questions that just should have been ignored.

That's the beauty of forums though, you help some you slam some

People post questions for [at least] 2 reasons - firstly to get the information they seek and secondly to feel a part of a live network of enthusiasts. The search button does nothing for the second reason.
So personally I don't mind people asking repeat questions, it keeps the community alive... as does a variety of responses, sarcastic included!

Here's my take on the "search" issue, for what it's worth. First of all the sticky at the top of the page is a must read for new members.......It talks about the search button, so that alone might clear up many unnecessary threads.

I also think a few of the old timers could take it a bit easier when commenting on the search issue. An example might be "the answer to your question is yes....there are warranty issues with the use of a piggyback"....however you can find tons of information by using the search funtion, then typing in piggybacks".

Lastly, I personally don't mind if certain subjects are brought up again. There might be some fresh ideas or advice that some people would like to hear/read. And sometimes (as mentioned on an ealier post) a thread can be soooo freaking long, it would take hours to get the information that a new member might be after. One example would be the Helix thread...it takes a lot of time to cover that entire thread....when maybe somebody is looking for a very simple answer.

Mike,

I completely agree with you. Internet forums are "at will" voluntary entities by and large and there are jerks all over them. I too have years of internet forum experience and yet many many times I get told to do a search after I already did a search and found nothing.

I think people who flame others in forums for the most part are just people who want to feel more power over others and cannot do it in real life so they do it in virtual space. Just boneheads acting out.

So, you are not alone in this feeling.

Cheers

J
