335i...ticking

My 335i M Sport is ticking from the passenger side of the engine bay and I cant work out why.

I have a sound clip on my phone but cant get it on here

Car isnt lacking any performance, its mainly on a cold start, cant be heard in the car but can if you stand next to it.

Any ideas? Difficult I know!

Sadly not uncommon. This might be of interest (yes I realise it's for the N52 in America):

they do tick and rattle far more than you'd expect from a BMW 6 cylinder.

Is it the same as this tick? http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1086608

The N54 is pretty noisy. A lot of the noise is the injectors, but there are sometimes extras on top of that too.

Mine is generally at its noisiest this time of year, once the weather warms up it seems to quiet down a fair bit.

I believe it is because it is direct injection.

Yeah, one of the symphonies that has been common amongst diesels for a long time. I assume its the 2000 or so bar of pressure that makes it so noisy.

Sounds like the lifters....I had a proper look for it and sounds like it's coming from the engine itself and the sound changes with revs

One other possibility could be cam chain tensioner. See this thread:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1080990

Admittedly petrol not diesel, but this poor guy thought it was lifters and only after changing them, discovered it was his chain tensioner..!
