My friend has a 330d touring 2006 he has bought a 2008 335d engine and gear box to do an engine change. Has anyone on here done it? Also will it be a straight swap and what else would be needed ?

Probably no one do it because it's simply not worth the hassle.Cheaper and quicker to sell 330d and buy 335d .

I am sure that gearbox will be different as well.

These days everything is controller by hardware / software. You may get the hardware done but what about the software. BMW equipment will not allow you to flash 330d gearbox to 335d specs.

Interesting project though.

He is the mechanic at Rs tuninng in leeds and wants to do the upgrade has complete engine and box to go in

fair point but it looks like hes bought a box too.

@OP has he bought an ECU or is he going to go aftermarket? Is it even possible to separate the engine management from the rest of the vehicle systems and run aftermarket? Is he getting silly with it while he's at it?

Which I knew more and could help out rather than say not worth your time ect , how do you know what his time is worth? Maby the 330d was bought cheap due to a engine fault and the 335d engine bought even cheaper ! , anything is possible, people seam to think you have to be a wizard to do certain things ,

Good luck to your mate, imo coding would be the biggest issue , pretty sure chassis wise there isn't much if any difference so the engine should fit

I've done an engine conversion in my other car, and yes I read that he has a gearbox as well but I stand by what I said.

When it comes to resale selling a 330d with a 335d isnt a selling point is it? I'd just buy a factory 335d rather than a 330 with an engine conversion done by someone who's never done it.

It doesn't matter whether the car was cheap as he bought it broken or he's had it for a while, or even how cheap the engine and box was, replace the 330 with a 330 engine if it's broken and keep/sell and sell the 335 engine/box.

If it was something a bit more interesting like fitting the 335d engine in a one series then I'd say go for it.

Nothing is impossible. Just some things very hard. Doesn't mean they are not worth doing.

It depends why he is doing it though. if it is just because he wants to, boredom, prove it's possible or something like that then fair play. Otherwise I am in agreement with others and can't see the reason for doing that over just buying a 335d.

The 330d engine is high mileage and got it for a good price he was going to throw money at it and hybrid etc so he's decided to stick a 335d lump in as he got it cheap do bought he will do more at some way along the line too

Looks like this is happening as his 330d blew us yesterday the breather was replaced and by the looks was faulty and has clogged up and blown the engine
