So how many miles, or how do you determine when the fluids have gotten to temp so that you can get on the power?

On a cold start from sitting overnight try to do at least five miles.
Usually drive my first mile or two when cold below 2500rpm.

I wait until 80 deg F oil temp to drive it moderately and about 160 deg F oil temp before I get on it. I have a gauge to measure this.

How many miles would you estimate to 160 degrees F in 50 degree ambient temps?

These cars warm up really fast. Less than 4 miles of city driving gets my oil up to temperature.

The N55 in the M235i uses a water-to-oil heat exchanger (and 3 water radiators) instead of an air-to-oil cooler (and one radiator) in the F30.

This setup has proven very effective, both in quick warmup and in excellent temperature control on track. In autocross, track, and very spirited street driving, I've never seen oil temps higher than about 250degF.

The 'warm- up' is a package of temps and systems. As my good Ferrari mech friend has stated many times to me and others in the group - You are warming all major systems to include the gearbox/differential which can contain thicker substances/oils etc that need time and distance to warm up. Its not just the engine oil and radiator fluids at all.

Brakes and to a certain degree tires as well. Air and atmospheric temps affect the warm-up period.

I would get a p3cars gauge takes all the guess work out totally worth the cost. Missed a great group buy that happened a little while back. Amazingly easy install , no splicing or anything, really crazy there's no factory oil gauge, they could have added it to the idrive or something

I believe you could just use a wireless (wifi) obd2 transmitter that connects to your iPhone or android and an app like obd fusion. It allows you to display custom gauges such as oil temp, coolant temp, intake air temp and such. Works great for me, the tool was like $40 and the app was $9.

My daily routine for starting my car.
1) mount radar detector on windshield and plug into electrical outlet.
2) mount dashcam on windshield and plug into electrical outlet
3) plug OBD II temp gauge device into outlet and pair up to phone

Sometimes it's just easier to use my Mitsubishi Mirage

You must have a ton of smudges on your windshield. You could just, you know...leave the radar detector mounted and plugged in, it doesn't draw power when the car is off. And I don't know what dashcam you have, I use a GoPro and leave the housing mounted as well, just recharge the battery at night or swap batteries when they run low on long drives. I don't have an OBD device, but am considering getting one...so I'll ask, why do you need to unplug your OBD every time you stop driving? Otherwise you seem to be doing 3x the amount of work necessary?

I was joking, don't have an OBD temp gauge. But during the day when I really need the detector and camera it's a pain because I'm not comfortable leaving them in the car when parked.
