x3 - safe for new baby?
i'm expecting our first baby in a couple months and i just got into a little fender bender with my x3. i'm fine, car's fine.
the problem is my husband -- he's freaking out saying that we need a "safer" car for the baby and i guess, me. but i love my x3 and i feel perfectly safe in it. please help me convince him that it is a safe car for a family. Thanks |

Choose an infant car seat that has an excellent safety rating and as long as it is properly fastened to the rear seat, everything should be OK.

What year is the X3???????? 07 and 08 have enhanced saftey features, agree with steve about the car seat. At the end of the day your child is only as safe as the seat they are in, the car is secondary. I personally bought the Recaro for my wifes X3 and I have a Britax in my car for our 3 year old

Here's something I just came across:
Woodcliff Lake, NJ - November 15, 2007... BMW of North America today announced that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded the 2008 BMW X3 and X5 the top rating of "Good" in each of its series of crash tests, earning both vehicles the Institute's coveted TOP SAFETY PICK Award. Receiving the TOP SAFETY PICK for the 2008 BMW X3 and X5 vehicles is one of many achievements that BMW has earned from the IIHS over the years. In fact-as a result of IIHS' crash tests in 2000-the 2001 BMW X5 earned a TOP SAFETY PICK, as well as the unique distinction of not only being the best SUV, but also being the best vehicle ever tested by IIHS to that point. The Institute rates vehicles "Good," "Acceptable," "Marginal" or "Poor" based on performance in high-speed Frontal Offset and Side Impact crash tests as well as an evaluation of the vehicle's Rear Crash Protection/Head Restraints, which protect against neck injuries in rear impact crashes. In order for a vehicle to become a TOP SAFETY PICK, it must earn "Good" ratings in all three Institute tests. Additionally, as of 2007, winning vehicles must also offer Electronic Stability Control (ESC) - a feature that both the 2008 BMW X3 and X5 offer with enhancements over previous models. The necessity for this feature is based on Institute research indicating that ESC significantly reduces crash risk, especially the risk of fatal single vehicle crashes, by helping drivers maintain control of their vehicles during emergency maneuvers. "We are proud to receive the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's TOP SAFETY PICK for both the 2008 BMW X3 and X5," said Tom Purves, Chairman and CEO, BMW (US) Holding Corp. "Achieving these top ratings is evidence of the excellent safety and crash protection provided by the X3 and X5 SAVs and is a true testament to BMW's dedication to providing a safe and superior driving experience."

It's weird that there is a thread about this because my sister was in an accident in her X3 last night. The driver of the other car was intoxicated, and instead of following the road and turing he came into the other lane, hitting her X3 head on. All the airbags went off, and from the looks of things the car will be totaled. But as for the safety of the X3, it is a very safe car. The two occupants of the other car had to be airlifted from the scene while my sister and dad walked away with no injuries.

There have been a lot of accidents with SUV's, most of them because people forget about the weight and the higher gravity center. You have to remember that if you have large wheels, there is an increased risk of aqua planning on a wet surface.. so lower your speed in the rain... Child seats are very important, look for the one that offers most protection, definitely ! |
