Seasick Steve

Those of you who lead more interesting lives may have missed Seasick Steve on Jools Hollands New Years Eve Hootenany.

This man is a guitar god. I just downloaded his album

http://www.seasicksteve.com/

If you missed it I urge you to watch this video right now:

The man is a legend.

Completely agree with you, NFS.

He's actually playing live in Newcastle at the end of this month, so I may see him on my birthday.

As I recall this was his second appearance on Jools. Goes down well with the Jim or Jack. I particularly like Jim Beam Black at the moment.

I just love the way Jools offers so many different styles and non-mainstream artistes. He's always been a huge influence on my playing too.

I've been so into music recently I've neglected the forum... and gone and ordered myself a new keyboard and amp as a new year gift to myself.

Actually I was, James.

When I gave Mrs Viv her presents on Christmas Day, she thought we could go abroad for a few days instead of going down to London.

So, I'm now trying to sort out what to do- London; Iceland maybe, with a day or two at the Blue Lagoon, or Newcastle & then on to somewhere else?

Don't worry James- I'm coming down to see you, Tony1, Tony2, Paul, Carlos et al at some point soon.

All the best.

Wink Steve is a great musician

I think I was very lucky to see Seasick Steve playing live at the Carling Academy, Newcastle, on my birthday.

A year ago, he played to an audience of about 200. This time, around 2000 people came to see him play.

For an American 'hobo', as he describes himself, who left home at 14 & travelled around on the back of passing freight trains & lived under bridges at times, I think he's done well- he's playing at the Royal Albert Hall later this year.

Anyway, I had a great time listening to his Mississippi blues. Considering he describes his 'instruments' as a pile of 'sh*te', he can certainly play evocative music from them.
His guitars are all 'cast offs', completely in tatters, stuck together with pieces of tape & whatever repair 'materials' he has at the time.

He had his drummer with him and his own 'guitars'- that was it.
He used 5 'normal' guitars, a '3-string' device & a '1-string' piece of 'sh*te'.
Even so, he sounded a whole lot better than most modern recording artists today, IMO.

If you get a chance to hear him play live, I suggest you make the effort- it will show you what 'real' music really is.

Below are a few shots from the evening.

All the best.

Viv
