Run Flats and what are my other options

I have been doing quite a bit of reading about Run Flats and how expensive and bad they are (overwhelmingly sentiment from most articles I have read).

My understanding is....
A. They are heavier than normal equally performing tires negating the weight savings from not having a spare.
B. They cost significantly more.
C. If they do get a flat you have to replace the tire, repairing is not an option.

I also understand there are arguments going both ways with the sidewalls

I am curious if we can ignore getting run flats and put on a normal set of tires (top of the line of course)?
If so then what is the flat tire solution in the event of? Is roadside assistance an option and cost no additional to tow the vehicle to a tire place? If going on a long trip is throwing a correct spare in the trunk an option?

Curious what others have and are doing with this issue?

The std M solution, the car comes with a small electric compressor and a can of sealant to spray into the tyre.

As pointed out above your car does not have run flats on it from the factory - it has Michelin Pilot Super Sport which are standard non-RFT tires. So yes you can ignore RFT, just like you can ignore any other consumable your car does not require.

Wow I feel silly. I thought the Run Flats came with the car because my CA explained that I would want to get a certain tire for winter that was a run flat and thought that the standard tires were also Run Flats.

This is great news as I wanted to avoid getting Run Flats and now realize these cars don't come standard with them.

Please ignore this thread then....

I was going to say wrong, but it would be a stretch to call the X5 M a "car".

It was on one of the BMW Web Based training modules I had to take. I'm seeing if I can dig it up. Stay tuned.

A run flat can be patched, though most dealers would rather sell you a new tire. I've had Discount Tire patch a run flat on my Stingray and so have many other people.

RFT (Really Fxxxedup Tires)

Run Flats suck, when they get about 50% down in tread, the ride becomes much harder, you'll want to get new tires. With that said they don't last as long.

Stuck in between Desert Center and Vidal junction (maybe some Calif guys know area) tire became flat on one of the many road dips, couldn't decide to go to Parker 60 miles, or turn around and go 70 miles to Blythe. Chose the Blythe route. Never drive those tires over 50mph, or 50 miles in total. They will disintegrate on the 50th mile and turn to shreds, you will have to pull over and be flat bedded. Had Autoclub, but in the heat of the moment forgot about the BMW service included. Had to stay at motel for a day to get tire sent in from Riverside. Found out a few days later, that BMW would have towed the car to wherever the tire was and supplied us transportation to the nearest lodging. Long story short I hate runflats.
