2015 M3 sedan 6 speed manual or DCT

hey everyone,

i just place an order for 2015 M3, options listed below

3C93 - M3 Sedan $74,000.00
Z0C - Premium Package $4,500.00
2MK - M Double Clutch Transmission $3,900.00
2VF - Adaptive M Suspension $900.00
4MC - Carbon Fibre Trim $500.00
A96 - Mineral White Metallic $895.00
LKSW - Black Extended Merino Leather $0.00

i came off from a 2009 328i x-drive coupe 6 speed manual, i am struggling if i should go for 6 speed again or DCT.

anyone is welcome to throw in ideas / comments, especially for those who actually own one.

i still have 5 days to decide before the production.

i live in toronto which has tons snow but my expecting delivery date is scheduled in late dec sigh. but will equip the snow tires immediately once the vehicle is ready to pick up oh well.

I went M DCT because I have not been very happy with BMW's recent manual transmission offerings though I do understand the F8x's are a lot better in this regard.I just sold my 2011 M3 that had the M-DCT that I had no issues with which was a very different experience than my 08 M3 with a manual which required a replacement transmission. The 2015 Z06 that hopefully I am getting next year will be the 3 pedal car.I drove a new Z/28 this week and the transmission & clutch are excellent which the way BMW used to build them a long time ago when the cars had a lot less power.

lol, i struggled alot.

i drive 6 speed for 7 yrs... and ultimately if i dont taste how differently a M powered 6 speed vs other 6 speed, its such a waste lol

but i gotta drive this m3 for another 5 to 7 yrs, so gonna stick w/ shit for total 10 yrs +? lol

Gotta go 6. Such a nice transmission and the rev matching takes away half the "dislikability!" If you write a post second guessing our responses you've already decided to get the automatic so don't bother

My E90 M3 was a manual. Many have complained about the shifter and clutch throw, but I liked the feel of that car very much.

Intellectually, I know full-well the DCT can outdrive a human... Quicker, faster, more precise. But I test drove a F80 M3 with the DCT and I felt very little involvement or satisfaction from grabbing paddles. The manual F8X shifters I had toggled in the showroom feel much more like an aftermarket short shifter than the aforementioned E90 M3

With budget/savings as a tie-breaker, I'd say manual.

6sp. Personally I don't want to get bored driving a MDCT. I know it will be faster etc etc. But it was all about the involvement and the fact that manuals may be extinct. Of course saving myself $3900 was a bonus.

Exactly what he said.

You will love your M either way, but I would definitely go 6MT. Love my 6MT M4, the only thing I would have prefer was a shorter stick, so the throw is shorter.

Congrats on placing the order!!

what u said is so true: *involvement & extinct*, and the most importantly, it saves my wallet for $3900.. i saw a e92 m3 today in a parking lot with 6 speed, i really wish i can get a try on it, how different compare to my old 328 6 speed lol.

do u guys know m5 decides to discontinue the production for 6 speed? while m3 uses the same transmission as m5, i m just abit over-worried what if bmw flips away the 6 speed for m3 in the next year or 2? then my f80 *assume its 6 speed* gonna depreciates alot or it becomes valuable? (supply vs demand theory).

i deeply appreciated everyone's comments, i will think about it and let you guys know once i have decision.

if i am in yours shoes, i would go for 6spd
my e92 m3 6spd is superb compare to z4mc i had. I have no doubt new m4 will be even better. I like 6spd because i can rev match my own and that $3,900 saving can go toward nice rims or exhaust

Its totally a personal choice. I have owned the E9x in DCT and 6spd, and I am in a 6spd M4 now.

No doubt in my mind I lapped faster in the DCT (were not allowed to time ourselves since it was "driver training") DCT has an extra gear and shifts super fast, but in the end I just simply prefer a 6spd.

Little tid bit. Apparently the DCT makes up 80% of sales but at the Canadian Euro Delivery tour, 60% were manual.

I think most people that want a manual KNOW they want a manual.

Odd

@e90sexion: yeah thanks for your comment! and... and congratezzzzzz to your m4!!! yay^^
that's right i guess i will opt out the DCT option and stay with 6 speed.

well yea what u said is right, it's all depends on personal preference. the sales said most ppl will go for dct for 4 doors (m3 in this case), as it is more practical... and it makes more sense for a m4 to go for manual... since 2nd hand market is also a concern as i m not leasing it.

oh well, from what we see on this page, i guess everyone agrees to go for 6 speed, sure, here i m, i gonna make a final call to the dealer before Friday and opt out the 6 speed.

another little question lol anyone has equipped the 'parking assist'? first of all i want to clarify i m totally fine with parallel parking tho...(please dont laugh at me ) lol... but it's just another fancy add-on for $400, at first i opt out the 'premium package' too as i dont need parking sensor / rear wheel camera bla bla bla, but a head-up display is a bonus =P ($4,500 for a parking sensor / rear camera is a totally RIP OFF!!! but i can't accept a 2015 car without those features

take a look guys.. it works on manual too

6MT all the way.

Rev matching rocks on this thing and the shifter is low effort, smooth and just a tad notchy getting into the gate.

And the 6MT lights up beautifully at night.

Totally personal, but I went 6 spd on my order.

I like to row, I like the engagement and I like the feeling of control over speed it gives me.

It is a decent enough unit (got to try one out on a test drive before I ordered) and, at some point, they will probably stop offering it. So, for as long as I can, I'll get an MT.

It is a fake

I tested M3 with 6MT a week ago.

I felt that I could just move foot from clutch pedal, the car will start as I slowly depress clutch pedal. You cannot feel when clutch is connecting to engine.

It is a big fake. In fact it is DCT with paddle shifters and clutch pedal. Nothing more.
