E90 for family car/baby duty

ok, i am excited about the new e90 b/c I think it looks great, sounds like a winner. I want to ask all you family drivers out there if you think the E90 will be a good car to cary a baby and all the associated accesories a child will require. I have an e46 M3 and am truely amazed at how much "stuff" I can cram in that car. It seats 4 adults comfortably enough. But now after countless mind numbing hours of shopping for baby stuff I am quickly seeing just how much of it has to fit in the car. My parents are 7 hours drive from our house. lots of other relatives are about 2 hours away so we will be hitting the road a lot. Please someone convince me I can make an E90 work instead of a land barge (although the bling factor of the Infiniti QX/Nissan Armada in black sure look nice ).

You should be fine I think. With just a baby and the wife you should still have room in the backseat, plus the trunk to store stuff.

You will be just fine. I have a 3 y/o and we fit everything with no problem and then some. No need to get a big SUV just to travel 7 hours.

The boot (trunk) isn't big enough to fit any of the prams we have purchased. Buggies ok.

Just make sure you get the rear folding seats, that adds a lot of variability to the e90. If you have a big child cart, the touring (e91) might be considerable.

The folding seats do offer a bit more room but with the baby taking up one half of the split, it's not that much more. There is also the concern of something moving from the boot into the cabin under heavy braking/accident etc. I always avoid using the fold down seats if he's in the car.

Of course the E90 will work fine as a family car. Why do you think people buy it in the first place? I haul around a 2yr old and my wife in it - it's our only car. I agree with others - get the fold down seats. No problem at all. The E90 is about as big inside as the E39 5-series, and in terms of cargo and passenger space it's infinitely better than the first car my wife and I had together.

As long as your wife isn't used to having lots of room to work with like a monster SUV, or my last car an Audi A8, you'll be fine. My wife would fill her SUV or my A8 for just a 2 day trip so she's feeling really cramped by the e90 so we can only take it on short trips.

We do have a bit of a problem as his collapsable play pen won't fit in the trunk without a seat folded down. Our jogging stroller has to have all the wheels removed, and even then it takes up almost 2/3 of the trunk but there's plenty of nooks and crannies if you want to stuff loose items around it. And his primo pregga (sp?) stroller takes up half the trunk.

As long as you're used to packing light, it should be fine. But if you've got a wife that likes to take everything it's gonna be tight.

You could always get an E91...and not have to worry about these things. Same driving dynamics...same "bling" ...bigger ass:-)

My e90 is used for the backup family car, I have a 21 month old with another baby on the way in March.

Everthing fits pretty well, and trunk is larger than it would appear from the outside.

That being said, We use my wife's RX330 as the family truckster 90% of the time on the weekend's

I sold my 2005 M3 Interlagos Blue Comp. Pkg. for my 2006 E90 330i. Manuvering a car seat in a 2 door car is really, really hard. Yes, the trunk in an E46 M3 coupe is quite large, but not as large & deep as an E90 sedan.

I think you will be very happy with an E90 sedan...if you do need a tad more room, then go for the E91 wagon or a 530xi wagon. Both good choices.

Good Luck!

Go with the e91. The e90 would certainly have plenty of room, but why not get a little more, since you considered an SUV anyway...
Just think, with all those miles, you would probably get double the gas mileage than you would with an SUV. When driving hwy miles, I get 30-31mpg with my e90.
Good Luck.

The E90 should be big enough. But if you want that extra space, do as some others suggested and get an E91.

I personally hate SUV's. The X5 for instance has storage less space than an E61 (5 series touring), but uses much more gas. Every time I see an SUV/4wd in a city I want to ask "where is the farm".

If you need more space for long trips, consider getting the rack on top with the carrier so that you can stow more stuff .

If your M3 fit the bill, the e90, which is bigger, surely will. I would say e91, but is it available in extra strength (330)

And for the love of everything that is sacred DO NOT get a monster truck like the Armada/qx

Rent or buy the extras.

What I mean by this is take a rational approach to the vehicle ownership.

Buy the car you would like to have for the 95% of the time that you are talking about.

If you go a long ways somewhere for a trip to visit family for a week just rent a minivan. The few hundred dollars you spend doing that will be a lot less than the gas, upkeep, and dollars you would spend to buy something bigger that you don't need. If you have a big family visiting for a while and need more space to drive around in, rent a minivan.

If you are going to visit some specific relative all the time or a group of relatives that live far away, but the group of them are all in the same place, buy another pack and play and leave it there and then use it when you get there. If you get the right one, and they are less than 100$, you could use it for a couple of years. That is a lot less $$ than buying a bigger vehicle along with the gas mileage and dissatisfaction that goes with it.

I'm a victim of this too in the past, but, why we need to buy vehicles these days in order to cover 100% of our needs is something to think about. An E90 looks to be a nice size for a family of 3 or 4, the E91 probably better, and then just rent or borrow for the other marginal uses for travel, vacation, etc. And, you'll be putting the wear and tear on a rental....

Having a baby/child in the family is fun. Good luck!

Regards,
Marc
