How to deactivate active engine sound?

I have read two links suggesting the "active sound" engine noise that is artificially amplified into the M235i can be deactivated. Here they are:

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=672496

http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=983411

Has anyone ever tried one of these methods on a 235i? Would appreciate some guidance as I find the noise very annoying. Thanks,

Thanks! Will a dealer do this? I am a bit challenged when it comes to this.

pikcachu, I see that you're one of the experts on the "coding" area. Would you mind sharing with me if disabling the air conditioning from turning on automatically when I start the car is possible with a code? Thanks for your reply.

I discovered that coding F020/F021 (within ASD 3000 Model Range) will not work to completely disable ASD. I coded F003 and was successful in completely disabling ASD.

Coding person in LA?

Does anyone know a reputable coding specialist in Los Angeles? I am to chicken to try the coding tips myself but would very much like to deactivate the active engine sound.

Do you have a picture or more detail to what you coded? I am not seeing F003 in ASD

I'm seeing conflicting answers to my question on the forums. Does the M235i have the pre-recorded engine sound or a microphone somewhere in the driveline that is piped through the speakers (like the M3/M4)?

Thanks for the photo. I finally got around to this change and I have to say it is BY FAR the BEST change yet. I feel more connected with the car now. Hearing the rawness of the exhaust and engine sounds instead of the fake active sound.

So can you confirm that you did in fact notice it being COMPLETELY off?

Yes from what I hear it is completely off. Here is a video I did to show what it sounds when active sound is disabled using the coding in the screenshot above.

Here is a M235i with active sound enabled for comparison

Good question. I could never find a clear answer on that.

Can you clarify? Completely disable, as in you still heard some ASD but to a lesser degree? I just modified to f020/f021 and it sounds fully off to me.

Yes, I noticed when you modify to f020/f021, while the ASD is reduced considerably, that there is still an undertone that may be the sound that is 'programmed' for the F20/F21. Try changing it to what I suggest and I guarantee you'll hear a difference, I did.

Thanks, I'll try shutting it off this weekend and report back. It must be a real subtle effect.

Thanks. I shut it off completely and then turned it back on after a day of driving with it. At least now I know how quiet the exhaust is... my 335is was louder and it was perfect. This muffler just needs a bit of packing removed. A different downpipe wouldn't hurt either, but the overruns sound cool already.

Got around to shutting off the Active Sound on my 228i using the F006 code as mentioned here (didn't bother trying F020/F021). I noticed a significant difference in engine noise after 4500 RPM. The car is naturally very quiet after 4500 rpm but Active Sound adds a nice bassy undertone. Active Sound was much less noticeable below 4500 RPM. I don't really like the fact that BMW has chosen this path. Really messes with my purist idealism....but the car definitely sounds better with Active Noise ON. I wish they just tuned the exhaust and made it sound nicer without this extra gimmick. I guess the advantage here may be that cars can be made more quiet (pack up that muffler like they did on this car).....and still make the car enjoyable to drive. This may not mean much I guess in a rural area with few cars but would maybe make a difference in the amount of car noise pollution in a large city with lots of cars...
