Installed Intake on my 2009 E92, looking for one more mod.
I just installed my Injen Intake on my 2009 E92. Turbo still seems a bit laggy. It's like it takes a second or so to kick in. I am looking for 1 more mod I can do this year that would help increase horsepower and sound quality. I will be doing a JB4 and CP next year. What else can I get to make my car a bit louder and add a bit more horsepower besides those 2 things and an exhaust?
Downpipe? Headers? Ideas.. |

Does it make sense to run a DP before installing my exhaust next year? Will it give it a better sound before the exhaust gets installed? Do you have any recommendations on a good DP that doesn't put a hole in my wallet? I don't want to car too loud.

If your interested in how it will sound look on youtube. There are plenty of good vendors here that might offer a discount if requested but ECS tuning and VRSF offer quality DPs for the money. Also depends on the size of exhaust your planning on adding down the line.

If you want to freee up your turbos more then get catless dps. I'm on the way to getting that soon as well.
JB4 did a big thing performance wise for me too, definitely one of the best things imo

Does "catless DP" mean a DP without an exhuast? I'm looking for a DP but I dont have an exhaust I might even be keeping my stock exhaust. Can I still get a DP if I keep my stock exhaust?

Thanks for the input. Some people here are running this Exhaust. It is pretty cheap less than $400. I could purchase this with the DP. Anyone against this one?

I will, another question I had was, how does the size of the exhaust or DP affect the sound of the car, the bigger the size the louder it is? I don't want it too loud.

Catless DP means there's not catalytic converter in the DP, technically this won't meet emissions requirements but there are fixes out there. They also usually cause a SES light on the dash which is annoying. Pretty much nothing will 'fix' the turbo delay/lag just because there needs to be a specific amount of air going into the turbo and it takes a second or two for the air to spin up the compressor, go through the intercooler then into the cylinder. A turbo engine will always have lag, it just depends on how big the turbo(s) are. In our case, the N54/55 have VERY little turbo lag and the boost threshold is extremely low, 1800rpm or so. In a car like a STi, the boost threshold is closer to 3.5-4k rpm so under 3.5k the car feels gutless, unlike ours.

Thanks for the reply. I'm really learning a lot from you guys, I really appreciate it! I am looking to buy a Catless DP and good sounding exhaust. Today. Does the size matter on the DP and Exhaust? They have to match, I don't want it too loud, should I do 3"? 2.5"?

I just messaged him, looking to get some today. So do most people just keep the stock exhaust if they go with catless DP's? Will the horsepower/sound increase?

correct me if im wrong, but catless downpipes won't do shit unless u tune for it in terms of horsepower, ur exhuast will be a little bit louder tho if thats what ur looking for tho

I'm getting a JB4 Tune next year just want to prepare and doing little things until the tune. Your saying a DP will not give my any horsepower without a tune? I think tons of ppl are running them without a tune.

On VRSF's site, it says (paraphrasing of course) any HP gains will be due to a tune.. So yes, you are correct, a tune to see any gains.. But.. the sound I believe is initially what the OP was looking for, can always tune later...

I am pretty new to this platform, not BMW's.. Anyhow, from SEARCHING and READING through the forums , it is recommended that you upgrade the plastic CP if you plan on tuning..

I want to thank everyone who contributed to this thread, I really learned a lot. I just purchased VRSF 3" Stainless Steel Catless Downpipes from the link below:
http://www.vr-speed.com/vrsf-3-stain...bmw-135xi.html My next purchase will be for a JB4 and CP and then I will be done with performance mods for a while. Thanks again everyone! |

You MIGHT get a few horsepower from catless downpipes without a tune. I have stock exhaust with the VRSF downpipes (also plenty more stuff as you can see from my sig) and the exhaust not is only slightly louder than stock. The CP will not bring any performance but it is more of an insurance piece because the stock pipes tend to break, even under stock boost numbers.
