Turner Motorsport Performance Tuning Module for F80 M3, F82 M4

It appears Turner Motorsport has a tuning solution for the F8x. This should be rather interesting to follow and I'm not sure if anyone has seen this. The gains look quite impressive. There's a thread on the other site where they actually respond to forum members. What a novel idea...

Looks interesting. Bit pricier than the JB4, from what I can tell. Well done website, also.

From the installation instructions, it looks like everything is installed in the engine bay, nothing in the passenger cabin?

Direct link to the product page on turner motorsport's site:

http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-20...ng-module.aspx

Description:

Quote:
This Performance Module is a direct plug in to the existing engine harness for a factory appearance and fitment and an instant 60hp gain @ 6650 RPM and 75ft-lbs of torque at 6500 RPM. These are simply amazing gains! It installs in approximately one hour and is completely reversible which makes this the easiest and most effective power upgrade you will ever make on this car. If you're looking for a substantial bump in power output, with minimal downtime for installation, full serviceability, and can be reverted back to stock then the Turner power upgrade is unbeatable!

Turner's M3/M4 upgrade solution is a tuning module that plugs in ahead of the engine computer on the wiring harness. It's not the run-of-the-mill 'piggy-back' style upgrades you find for less. Inside our module is a sophisticated control unit that is designed to complement and work with the factory ECUs. The maps and algorithms within the control unit have been optimized for the S55 engine, sending revised fuel and ignition parameters to the stock ECUs to control boost depending on load, engine speed, and other factors. Our control unit integrates seamlessly to extract more power and torque without faults and errors - just smooth power and torque. The harness has factory-style weather-proof plugs to connect in-line with each boost pressure sensor and the camshaft position sensor on the engine.

All of the factory safeguards remain in place, including overload protection and warm-up protocols to preserve longevity and factory drive-ability. One of the key advantages of this type of system is that it is unaffected by factory BMW updates and service. If BMW updates the computer software to fix any small bugs or issues, the Turner performance upgrade is not lost or overwritten. This is key on new models because BMW is constantly releasing small software updates. All of the factory diagnostics and service access is retained. A valet connector is included and installs in minutes to bypass the performance module and revert the car to factory settings. This upgrade was developed, tested, and dyno proven for all 2014, 2015 and newer BMWs with the S55 engine.

Their answer to why this is more expensive than JB4.

Quote:
There are several reasons why our tune is more money than BMS. It is simple.

Although many like to consider our module a piggyback like BMS, it's not. Our modules contain microprocessors to assist with real-time data-logging and is loaded with vehicle-specific mapping files for proper optimization. The module connected with the wiring harness, allows for accurate control of various parameters; such as ignition timing, fuel injection timing, and boost pressure for smoothly calibrated power. (Our module plugs into more sensors than BMS)

Due to the level of integration of our module, and the way it communicates with the factory ECU, we are able to extract more power across the entire range of the power band in comparison to BMS effectively. Not to mention the other features we are capable of adjusting directly on the ECU and TCU themselves providing additional tuning calibrations such as, speed limiter removal and shift point adjustments...just to name a few.

That's fair. I'd ask on the 'other' forum directly, but that is currently blocked from where I am accessing the internet.

It's the same as a JB4 only when installed as "Stage1" without the CANbus, fuel, or EWG access. Crazy what they are trying to charge for a Stage1 tune.

Agreed! Mike when are your units gonna be out to kick their ass (final release)? I seriously have and always will use BMS tuning, it has never given me any issues in any of my cars with outstanding performance gains.

While turner is a VERY reputable company/shop, I do think it's a bit ridiculous that they're charging that amount of money for exactly what @mike@n54tuning.com said:
Stage 1 with no added benefits. No CAN for code reading/deleting, not EWG access for better boost control, and no Fuel mass tap. The JB4 is literally more superior in every way at a more affordable price point.

Wait until Dinan's piggy pricing comes out, if you find this too much markup.

With Turner you are paying extra for the name.

Will Turner is a hell of a guy in my experience. He was the instructor at my first HPDE, I've done business with him since and found him to be outstanding in that regard, and of course he's a really talented race driver and an even more talented race team manager.

So I'm a little nervous about this announcement on a purely technical level.

Doesn't an additional 75 pound feet of torque at 6500 rpm equate to an additional 93 horsepower? Where am I going wrong here?

Had a JB4 on my 135I, currently have a JB4 on my X1 35I. Buying a JB4 as soon as I get my M3.

Besides me not having any sort of issues with the JB4, and having awesome power gains at an incredible price! One of many reasons I love having the JB4 is because of Terry's customer service.

I had random questions(dumb questions ) on my setup in my 135I and he would reply in a matter of hours....on a SUNDAY nonetheless!

Customer service and backing up your products goes a long way for me.

It looks like another TMC tuning box.

I believe that Vivid Racing also rebrands TMC tuning boxes as the "VRTune Tuning Box".

Hmmm, they mention they ran the quarter mile in 11.7 seconds with their tune alone. Anyone know the trap speed they ran?

The Turner race team is very successful in the Tudor racing series. It's a tough series. The Turner site is top notch. Tuning is each persons choice. Period. I happen to favor Dinan, that's my choice. I do not rag anyone picking otherwise. It's each persons car, if it blows up, the choice they made will be what they live with. We all want more power, the risks/consequences of that are an individual choice.

+1

Glad there are options tho- competition here is good. Otherwise a crappy tune would sell like crazy and not give optimum results.

Anybody snag one of these yet? I'm curious how this will compare to the Dinan and Burger Tuning units.

I would love to see a Dinan, Burger, and Turner dyno showing the gains of each after their tune is installed.

You're concern is valid, problem is the size of the stock turbos will not flow enough air to make +75 lb/ft at 6500, they start to run out of lungs by 4500 RPMs, which is where the max torque is made. Peak HP gain is probably closer to 5k, and with max HP gain above 6500 rpm a lot lower than 60HP, probably closer to 30-40HP.
