Help? Best price for 7-year extended warranty?

Hey folks,

If you search wikipedia for unlucky, my name shows up.

I want to plunk down the money for a 7-year extended warranty for my F30. I've gotten a quote for $3700 from a local dealer.

This same dealer also quoted me "$300-$400" to replace a tire that's $180 on tire rack, so yeah I'm skeptical. #stealership

I've heard rumors that you can buy BMW extended insurance from out of state... unless your state is California. Of course, I live in California. What's the scoop on that?

Any recs for a strategy or a dealer to contact to get a better deal on an extended warranty?

I heard Autopom is good....several folks on this forum have used it although I have not. But I plan to get an extended warranty next year and will definitely take a look at them.

There's no point in buying an extended warranty at this time. Wait until shortly before your new car warranty expires.

It has been reported by reputable CAs that BMW has instituted a policy that the car must be brought to the dealer before a warranty can be sold on it, effectively eliminating long distance sales.

$3700 is way too much. You can easily get this for under $3000.

The true problem in this nonsense is the transparency of what this costs. I really wished that BMWNA offered it as a stand alone product, that is $X,XXX at every dealership nationwide.

Just save the extra money and use it for repairs if needed. Who knows, you might never have an issue and on top of that you might not even keep the car that long.

The last 2 BMWs I've had, repairs were manageable within the 7 year period. It was after that when all the major stuff started to go wrong, which would have made the ext warranty a moot point anyway.

But the game has changed. Our new BMW are not exactly DIY friendly as yeas before and repairs are going to be more costly me thinks

I do not, but if you search on this forum or on Bimmerfest you will find some threads with contact information for their representatives.

A good indie shop can do a great job at a reasonable price and the $$ for an extended warranty could instead easily cover a few years worth of minor repairs. But what if its a major job? I guess like every other insurance, people pay for peace of mind Thankfully, I don't have to think about this until end of 2015/early 2016!

100% agree. After the seven year mark on my e46 is when the big repairs started kicking in. Just needed a differential mount this week too. Still love the car though.

Also consider mechanical breakdown insurance from geico. It's around 50 per year or less, and covers all mechanical or electrical repairs to 100k with a 250 deductible. It's a steal.

We can use Geico Mechanical breakdown for new cars up to 18 months if I am not wrong. When I decided to buy one, I passed the deadline by 2 months unfortunately.

This. Take 3k and put it into a mid-yield fund (think fidelity/t rowe price lifestyle funds) and let it park there for 4 years until your initial factory warranty runs up. Then just keep it in there until there is a majory repair. Assuming you get 6% return (which is very probable), I'd bet your come out on top.

+1. If you can afford it, self-insuring is almost always more cost-effective than buying insurance. If you've got ~$3k laying around to buy insurance with, I'd probably forgo the extended warranty and earmark that money for potential repairs down the road. Or maybe put the money to work by investing in something low-risk (high-interest savings, CD, etc) if you like to gamble.

I think what you do with the money you are saving really depends on your tolerance for risk. If you want to ensure that most, if not all, of your initial investment is still around in 4 years (i.e., available to pay for the inevitable repairs), I wouldn't be comfortable investing in stocks. Especially given that we have been in a bull market for past 6 years and indexes are at record highs.

Now if you were investing for the long term (20+), I'd agree that you'd likely make money in the stock market. (But I'm kind of a wimp when it comes to investing.) Making money in the stock market is easy when the markets are going up; it is much trickier when the markets are declining. Remember: Bulls make money. Bears make money. Pigs get slaughtered.

Any reputable dealers in VA/MD/DE/NJ/PA/DC that would be able to get someone the best pricing on this?

Also, anyone know the terms of this extended warranty? Are we talking about bumper to bumper or powertrain?

Bumper to bumper should be for $3K. Dude, just call and ask.

Except this isn't just call and ask ONE dealer. Chances are I would have to shop for an extended warranty in the same way that I did for the car which includes dealing with a handful of internet sales departments. Obviously, if someone on this forum already went through this, their experience may be able to cut down on that leg work.
