We drove up there 2 years ago in our 11 X5 and both navigation and Sirius/XM radio worked. You should have Canada as one of your destination selections in your Idrive menu.
I don't believe you need anything special other than what you already need to have with you in your car by law in the US

Passport and change it to kmph once you cross the border (or maybe the US market cars get both mph and kmph on the dials?)
This question is great because I'll be driving to NYC later this week. Good to know Sirius will work. |

I've been pulled over for 145 before.
I'd say if you want to be safe, keep it under 120 (I would be VERY surprised if anybody got a ticket for going 120). That being said, most cars will be going 120-140 in the left lane. Limit + 10kmph tends to be safe on any road. |

Passport...registration...proof of insurance that meets Canadian laws (coverage limits, etc).I'd check with your insurance agent to make sure you're covered in Canada.Of all the times I've crossed I've only been asked for car documents once...but that doesn't mean it won't happen to you.And be careful of MPH vs KPH.

FYI...don't even think of doing 110 mph in NYC...unless you have a desire to meet a member of the NYPD.And be aware that they require *cash* when being bribed...they don't take maple syrup.

A couple of times while driving through Ontario (not in Toronto itself) I recall seeing huge signs that said if you were caught doing more than a certain amount over the speed limit (can't recall the figure) you were subject to a $10,000 fine and having your car seized on the spot.Ever since seeing that sign I *never* do more than 65mph there regardless of what others are doing on that particular road.

haha jk, things will still be run separately. Wonder how the US government will react to this very obvious tax inversion deal.

from personal experience, here are a few tips about driving on the 401/ Ontario roads in general:
1) Don't be the lead car if you are speeding 2) Do watch out for on-ramps and steep curves. If OPP wants to set up speed traps they will do it at a place you can't foresee. 3) 10% over posted limit seems reasonable to any law enforcement. Although no one bats an eye if you do 120kph on the 401 (as that's generally the speed in the RIGHT lane)

If an Inuit invites you to his igloo, you have to accept to share his wife (if offered) or else it's rude and may land you in some serious trouble. But 120 km/h in a 100 zone is totally fine.

You can thank the late Paul Walker and Vin Diesel for the harsh rules surrounding 150km/h (or 93.2 mph). These laws were adjusted a few years ago because too many kids were watching F&F movies and then going out in their Civics and racing each other on public roads. Law makers decided that anything over 150 km/h is considered "racing"...even if you are alone on the highway at 3am.
Mind you with traffic in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) the way it is lately, 3am is about the only time of day you need to worry about speeding, cause any other time of day you'll be lucky to be moving at the posted speed limit, lol. Especially on the aforementioned HWY 401. 401 is the second busiest HWY in North America - only one HWY in LA that handles a greater daily volume of cars. Good luck going 130 on there! I go 135km/h on the QEW (local Toronto hwy) everyday and have never been pulled over once...in my car. On the bike (Yam R1) it's an entirely different story. This to say that most cops will consider more than the speed before pulling you over. If you're a punk driving a slammed GTI and you're doing 125...you'll might get pulled...just as Gramps in his E Class cruises by at 140. |
